Deradicalization Prevents the Spread of Radical Understanding

The Indonesian government has never been afraid to continue fighting the radical movement in Indonesia. For this reason, efforts to deradicalise must be carried out thoroughly, starting from upstream to downstream.

Radicalization that occurred in Indonesia has provided various evidences of destruction and destruction as well as hostility. If we interpret, radicalization is a transfer of ways of thinking to be tolerant of violence with a specific purpose.

So if someone calls on the name of God to destroy fellow human beings, it cannot be called Jihad, but rather a real manifestation of radicalism.

Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Suhardi Allus explained, the process of spreading radical thoughts was divided into 5 stages, namely the existence of messages, senders, media, recipients and social context.

Some steps to be taken by the government to prevent exposure to radicalism in Indonesia include reviving flag ceremonies in schools and institutions, installing CCTV in all places of worship, certifying preachers, installing CCTV in all places of worship and the existence of CPNS selection tests and BUMN employees can indicate a person is exposed to radicalism and terrorism.

Efforts to tackle radicalism, especially in cyberspace, are not only the responsibility of the Government. The next generation of young people in this case the students also have an important role. Because after all, the younger generation now constitutes the majority of social media users.

So that the campaign to reject radicalism should be carried out synergistically by many parties. Because the roots of radicalism do not stand alone, of course it cannot if the efforts of deradicalization are only carried out by one institution.

Earlier, Indonesian Vice-President Ma’ruf Amin said deradicalization of Indonesian citizens who had joined radical groups was not an easy practice. This is of course a consideration of the government in deciding not to repatriate hundreds of ex-Indonesian ISIS members.

According to Ma’ruf Amin, Deradicalization of those who have been exposed to radical understanding is not something easy, escorting convicted terrorists in Indonesia alone is not easy. Therefore, it is safer and more beneficial if the government chooses not to repatriate ISIS EkS Indonesian citizens.

Moreover, they have deliberately tore their passports, of course symbolically it shows that they have become ex-Indonesian citizens and are anti-Pancasila.

One of the de-radicalization efforts was carried out by Ali Fauzi, a former Bomb assembler in the Jemaah Islamiyah group, who underwent military training in the Southern Philippines in the mid-90s.

Ali did the de-radicalization with his friends starting in 2016. He also mentioned around his residence on the north coast of Java, especially East Java, there were dozens of people who left for Syria and Iraq, while the arrest of members related to JAD, continued for several years.

He said, as long as there is still recruitment and training, there must be action, recruitment which according to him goes much faster than the efforts to deradicalise.

Data from the BNPT also shows that there are currently around 600 ex-convicts of terrorism (napiter) in Indonesia, with hundreds of their family members, including their wives and children who are also expected to be exposed to radicalism.

While in the last four years, the former napitre under the auspices of the Peace Circle Foundation which he leads is still under 100 people, including those who are still behind bars because of their association with JAD.

All this time Ali used his personal experience in abandoning violence to persuade ex-prisoners to abandon destructive thinking.

In addition, Ali Fauzi also often participates in routine events called the recitation of the street light. Where the study brings together victims of bomb blasts such as the Bali Bombing and JW Mariot Bombing.

During the meeting, the prisoners will be filled with tears after hearing the story of the victims of the bombing, who not only suffered physical or psychological injury, but also lost their livelihoods.

Of course, de-radicalization efforts can also be made to those who will be free from punishment or to those who receive remission. Hopefully someday they can invite their friends to eliminate destructive thinking and be more tolerant of differences.
