G20 Momentum Indonesia Shows Success in Controlling Covid-19

The government must take advantage of the G20 event, especially in showing Indonesia’s success in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on many sectors, including the health, social and economy of the world’s people. In addition, slowing economic activity and growth, inequality in access to health and vaccines and post-pandemic economic recovery are some of the major problems facing the world today.

The Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISPOL) UGM, Wawan Mas’udi, said that the G20 Presidency with the theme “Recover Together, Recover Stronger” will be a moment for Indonesia’s recognition as a country with a developing economy and strengthening Indonesia’s diplomacy in world leadership.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia Sri Mulyani Indrawati said, Indonesia needed to show good capabilities in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Because this ability will determine the credibility and effectiveness of Indonesia’s leadership in the G20 Presidency, especially in front of many countries with the highest economic levels in the world.

Sri Mulyani also said, in the G20 Presidency, the topic of handling Covid-19 will be discussed in forums at the level of the finance minister or central bank governor. This will also be an important aspect of determining the economic development of a nation in the future.

The government will continue to focus on overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic as well as accelerating the handling of access to vaccinations for the community. Sri Mulyani also said, handling this pandemic would of course use the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) to support community economic growth. The goal is that the economy has resilience and has the ability to recover.

Previously, Sri Mulyani also said that Indonesia was included in the 5th largest country in the world in terms of access and achievement of Covid-19 vaccinations. This achievement can of course be news that deserves to be discussed in the G20 momentum.

The theme of Recover Together, Recover Stronger reflects the importance of promoting productivity and resilience as well as stability as well as ensuring positive and sustainable development. These efforts will be supported by strong global leadership and a supportive partnership environment.

Sri said the purpose of this theme was to strengthen coordination and collaboration in financial and fiscal-monetary policies to promote joint recovery and no country should be left behind on the recovery path.

As part of the global community membership and also as the G20 presidency, Indonesia will take advantage of this momentum to encourage global collaboration and cooperation. According to the Minister of Finance, as in a pandemic, climate change cannot be handled by one country even though they are big countries.

Indonesia itself has a target for cooperation in holding the presidency of the G20 Summit. The implementation of the G20 2022 is targeted to be able to resolve the post-pandemic unbalance situation.

The G20 Summit must focus on strengthening multilateral cooperation to ensure a balance in economic growth in each country. Of course, it is not easy to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic without strong leadership. The reason is, the corona virus has been proven to have an impact on various aspects, especially in the health and economic sectors. Disruption of the economic aspect will certainly have an impact on the security aspect. Many people have lost their jobs.

Previously, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that Indonesia would continue to encourage G20 countries to build collaboration and build strength to ensure that the world community can feel the positive impact of this cooperation, including poor and developing countries.

The President also said that Indonesia is trying to build a fairer world governance. Through the G20 Presidency, Indonesia will continue to strive to strengthen world solidarity in tackling climate change and sustainable development.

In terms of economic recovery, the government is considered to have worked quite optimally. Several months ago, the Indonesian economy experienced a recession and economic growth reached its lowest point and touched a lower minus 5 percent.

The G20 event in Nusa Dua, Bali must of course be used as a momentum to increase economic diplomacy through efforts to create an economic and global health architecture after the Covid-19 pandemic crisis.
