Indonesia`s Tempe Promoted at Oxford University

London (cidiss.co) – A group of Indonesian students in the United Kingdom recently organized a workshop on tempe (fermented soybean cake) at the Oxford University to familiarize more people on its significance in the worlds healthy food diversity.

The Association of Indonesian Students (PPI)-Oxford chapter co-organized the workshop with the Indonesian Tempe Movement (ITM), as part of the ITMs public awareness campaign, Head of the PPI-Oxford Chapter Sandoko Kosen told ANTARA here on Tuesday.

By introducing the students on the tips of tempe making, they are expected to get more “closer” to this traditional side-dish and gain inspiration to run small-scaled tempe-making industries, he said.

As one of Indonesias authentic side dishes, tempe is believed to meet the worlds demand for a healthy, delicious and eco-friendly food. Therefore, the commercial aspect of tempe can be potentially developed internationally through its unique identity, he added.

Besides organizing this workshop, the ITM also held international conferences and published books on tempe, registered tempe as UNESCOs intangible heritage, as well as trained tempe makers at Cipinang prison in Jakarta, Kosen asserted.

The Indonesian Trade Ministry has always predicted that the countrys tempe products could meet the demands of the international markets, considering the presence of several hundred millions of vegetarians in the world.
