In the atmosphere of Indonesia’s diversity, PON has always been an event that unites various elements of society from Sabang to Merauke, from different cultural, ethnic, religious, and regional backgrounds. The XXI PON is expected to serve as a bridge for strengthening unity among the nation’s children, while also being a platform to showcase the spirit of sportsmanship and togetherness.
Since its inception in 1948, the National Sports Week (PON) has become a symbol of national unity, reflected in healthy competition across various sports disciplines. Through sports, the Indonesian community is invited to experience solidarity, mutual cooperation, and harmony among regions. In the midst of the various challenges of diversity faced by this nation, the National Sports Week (PON) continues to play an important role in fostering the spirit of nationalism, where athletes from different provinces gather and compete with a sense of togetherness to represent their respective regions, yet within the framework of Indonesian unity.
The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, emphasized that the PON is not just an event to win medals and achieve accomplishments, but also an important moment to strengthen unity and togetherness among the Indonesian people from various regions. PON is regarded as a platform that demonstrates that the Indonesian nation, with its diverse cultures, ethnicities, and languages, can unite in the spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity.
In his statement, the President expressed that the National Sports Week (PON) is a golden opportunity for all Indonesian people to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that have long been established. The spirit of sportsmanship upheld in every PON match reflects the resilient, fair, and respectful character of the nation. For this reason, the President invites all Indonesian citizens to not only focus on victory but also to celebrate the spirit of togetherness that has been created through this sporting event.
President Jokowi stated that the National Sports Week (PON) is an opportunity for all Indonesian people to strengthen unity and brotherhood throughout Indonesia. The President invites all Indonesian citizens to celebrate PON XXI together with a spirit of sportsmanship, joy, and togetherness.
The PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024 is a very special edition. For the first time in history, this national sporting event is being held in two provinces simultaneously. The decision to hold the National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh and North Sumatra was made with the aim of accelerating the distribution of opportunities to host for provinces that have not previously organized the PON.
For Aceh, which is hosting for the first time, PON XXI is a great opportunity to showcase the potential and spirit of the people of Aceh in supporting national sports. Meanwhile, North Sumatra, which previously hosted PON in 1953, feels a special pride in being entrusted once again to hold this major event. The experience provided an opportunity for both provinces to collaborate for the success of the event.
In line with President Jokowi, the Chairman of the Central National Sports Committee (KONI), retired Army Lieutenant General Marciano Norman, stated that the organization of the XXI National Sports Week (PON) should serve as a momentum to enhance the unity and cohesion of the nation as well as the achievements of national sports. Marciano also welcomed and appreciated the ministries and agencies that have provided support to ensure the success of the 2024 PON. The support from the ministries and agencies is primarily in terms of the development of transportation infrastructure, health facilities, communication, and various other forms of assistance.
The organization of PON XXI is not only expected to enhance national sports achievements but also to strengthen relationships between regions and among citizens from all over Indonesia. With thousands of athletes, officials, and supporters coming from various corners of the archipelago, PON XXI becomes an important opportunity to get to know each other, understand one another, and celebrate the diversity that exists in Indonesia.
In addition, the organization of PON XXI brings positive impacts on the regional economy, especially in the tourism, trade, and services sectors. Many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in both provinces are experiencing the benefits from the arrival of athletes, officials, and tourists. Their presence is expected to provide an economic boost for the local community, while also introducing the natural beauty and unique culture of Aceh and North Sumatra to the national stage.
For a longer period, PON XXI is seen as a means to develop sports infrastructure in Aceh and North Sumatra. Various sports facilities that have been built or renovated to support this event are expected to be utilized by the local community after the PON event concludes. These facilities can become a sustainable legacy, contributing to the development of sports at both regional and national levels.
Overall, the 2024 PON XXI Aceh-Sumut is expected to be an important pillar in advancing national sports, strengthening unity, and providing a positive impact on the economy and infrastructure of both provinces. This event has become a symbol of the spirit of togetherness and sportsmanship that is hoped to be passed down from generation to generation, as part of the effort to build a more advanced and united Indonesia.
