Preventing Radicalization among the Community

The development of radical ideology is still a big threat for Indonesia. This understanding is considered dangerous because it can cause disharmony between communities. In fact, this understanding can trigger a person to commit terror and acts of violence, so that prevention is needed to prevent prevention together.

Who would have thought if this radicalization had touched all lines of society. Both civilians, officials, ASN, SOEs to the security forces. Its movement is enough to make the government frenzied. It is hard to believe that the series of bombing incidents in a number of regions has been motivated by the exposure to radicalism that has become. Some say if the bombers are Lone wolf.

Which moves alone without the ties of similar groups. Nevertheless, do not rule out the possibility, this lone wolf has a connection with other parties via the internet and cyberspace. Because, now a lot of radical-smelling content scattered. In fact, one of the suspects stated that his ability to assemble bombs was obtained through the You Tube channel.

However, there have also been cases of bombings involving a large number of extended families. This breaks the notion that terrorism is often influenced by poverty and education. Because, in fact, these people are qualified enough to carry out a neat attack strategy.

Researchers from the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Social Conflict at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Indonesia, Solahudin, said the process of radicalization of religion goes so fast that it does not take into account one’s educational, social and even economic status. In its journey, terrorist groups often peddle a variety of narratives about the abundance of life. Precisely under the auspices of the Khilafah and the application of Islamic law. Including positioning the western countries is the main enemy of Muslims. They even stressed the end-time prophecy in which Syria is said to be the most blessed place.

In “Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat Prepared” (PDF) compiled by Mitchell D. Silber and Arvin Bhatt, the method of radicalization is divided into four stages. These results were concluded after conducting a series of observations of terror cases in Madrid (in 2004), London (in 2005), Australia (in 2005), Toronto fiber (know 2006).

The four stages include the pre-radicalization phase, self-identification, indoctrination, and finally the jihadisation. Pre-radicalization is the initial period of the process of radicalization which imaged the conditions of the individual concerned before being incorporated into hard-line terrorists. Second, self-identification is often defined as the phase when individuals begin to be exposed to radical ideologies that make them redefine the meaning of religion and life.

Next enter the indoctrination stage. This process is the momentum when the perpetrators begin to believe that the act of jihad is justified in order to pass the goals brought by the group. And the last stage is the phase of jihadisation or popular with the stage where the perpetrators have entered into the execution of terror. In fact, their identities have also been transformed into “religious holy warriors”.

Anne Aly in her article published in The Guardian stated two steps that could be taken to reduce radicalization. One, understand the reasons or background why the parties concerned are exposed to the ideas of radicalism and terrorism. Second, carry out interventions both persuasively and legally.

In the archipelago itself, the step in overcoming radicalization has actually been taken by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT). According to Irfan Idris as the Director General of BNPT Deradicalization, the program taken includes training for prisoners of terrorism through assessment or assessment methods.

In addition to the assessment, the deradicalisation steps of the BNPT have been made as optimal as possible. Every terrorism prisoner is identified and rehabilitated. Including, some of them were helped to do business so that they could return to the community.

Nevertheless, not all handling by the government through BNPT was deemed effective. Faisal Margie, senior researcher from DASPR Daya Makara University of Indonesia, expressed the step of de-radicalization in the form of mixing between prisoners and prisoners of terrorism actually became a debate because it was considered to trigger the strengthening of radicalization.

According to him, de-radicalization can actually be carried out anywhere with a number of random participants, provided that there is an appropriate assessment. This assessment must be able to separate terrorist prisoners who are leaning towards radicals and fanatics alone.

Finally, efforts to deradicalize this must continue. Considering there are many actors who are aware and can re-mingle with society as before. Although not an easy matter, being aware of this radicalization is considered to be quite fundamental, because it is directly related to religion.
