Government Provides Decent Housing for Workers, a Real Form of Concern for Workers

JAKARTA- The government continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating social justice by providing decent housing for workers. This program is a real form of the state’s support for the group of workers who have been the driving force of the national economy. The provision of subsidized housing in industrial areas not only answers the basic needs of workers, but also strengthens the ecosystem of a healthy and productive life.

The Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, emphasized that the government will allocate 20,000 subsidized housing units for workers in various regions.

“Workers are the backbone of national development. The government is giving a special gift in the form of decent housing ahead of Labor Day on May 1, 2025,” said Maruarar Sirait.

He added that the data on prospective recipients has been prepared in detail by BPS, complete with information by name by address. This data is continuously updated every three months to ensure that the program is right on target. With this step, workers no longer have to live far from their workplace or settle in areas that are not suitable for habitation.

Another advantage is that workers can now save time and transportation costs because houses are built near industrial areas. This also contributes to increased productivity and the formation of a more solid community among fellow workers. The presence of public facilities such as green open spaces, health centers, and places of worship also demonstrate the government’s holistic approach to building sustainable settlements.

The Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, welcomed the move and called it an important breakthrough for workers’ welfare.

“Decent housing is a primary need for workers. This is a quick and precise step from the Ministry of PKP to realize social justice,” said Yassierli.

The financing scheme through subsidized KPR with low interest and long tenors also makes it easier for workers to own a home. Transparency and digitalization in the application process expand access to this program, making it inclusive and friendly to workers from various sectors.

Housing for workers is now a new symbol in the development paradigm. The government does not only act as a regulator, but also as a protector of the basic rights of workers. This program reflects that human development remains a top priority on the journey towards a more just and prosperous Indonesia. [^]
