Appreciating the Smoothness of Simultaneous Regional Election Disputes, Security Forces Ready to Guarantee Security in the Papua Region

By: Roy Andarek )*

The 2024 simultaneous regional elections in West Papua have faced various challenges, especially related to disputes over election results. The West Papua General Election Commission (KPU) has shown readiness and professionalism in dealing with this situation. In this context, the statement from the Head of the Technical Division of the West Papua KPU, Muhammad Gandhi Siradjuddin, is very important to reflect the existing conditions.

Gandhi revealed that there were 12 lawsuits filed regarding the vote recapitulation results from various regions. These lawsuits came from four districts, one city, and the provincial level. The areas involved include South Sorong (2 lawsuits), Raja Ampat (3 lawsuits), Tambrauw (3 lawsuits), Maybrat (2 lawsuits), and Sorong City (1 lawsuit). This shows the complexity faced by the election organizers.

Gandhi stated that the coordination meeting was held to gather the district/city KPU to prepare data and documents in facing the dispute at the Constitutional Court. With this step, the KPU of Southwest Papua showed its dedication to transparency and accountability in the election process. Thorough preparation is the main key in maintaining public trust and maintaining stability in Southwest Papua.

It is interesting to note that Sorong Regency is the only region that is not facing a lawsuit, so it is estimated that it will follow the inauguration schedule in the first wave, namely on February 7, 2025. If the Constitutional Case Register Book (BRPK) is issued earlier, the inauguration can be carried out in the first wave. However, if the final decision of the Constitutional Court is issued in mid-March, the inauguration will shift to the second wave, namely early April.

With such uncertainty, it is very important for the community to remain calm. The appreciation conveyed by Gandhi to all parties who contributed to the success of the Papua Barat Daya Pilkada, including KPPS, PPS, PPD, KPU districts/cities, candidate pairs, and the community, should be a motivation to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.

The KPU expressed its gratitude to all parties who have maintained the security and peace of Southwest Papua during the regional election process. Gandhi hopes that the community will remain patient and wait for the final results from the Constitutional Court. This statement underlines that collaboration and mutual respect are key in facing challenges.

Amidst the tensions that arise due to the dispute, the presence of security forces, in this case Apkam, is very crucial. Apkam must be ready to guarantee security throughout Papua so that the community can feel calm. This is a special concern considering the potential for conflict that can arise due to the dispute. With the guarantee of security, the community is expected to be able to undergo this election process with a sense of security without fear of actions that can disrupt order.

The police and TNI have prepared to maintain stability and security. They are committed to actively supervising and anticipating any possibilities that could disrupt the democratic process in Southwest Papua. Close cooperation between the KPU and security forces is expected to minimize social friction and create a conducive situation.

The KPU of West Papua has shown optimism in facing the legal process at the Constitutional Court with thorough preparation. This encourages the hope that all elements of society will maintain peace and remain calm while waiting for the final results. The community is also urged to remain calm until all stages are completed.

With all the efforts made, from the preparation of the KPU to the support of Apkam in maintaining security, it is hoped that the results of the 2024 Pilkada can provide clarity and bring West Papua to a better direction. Success is not only measured by the inauguration, but also by the involvement and commitment of all stakeholders in creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Furthermore, KPU and Apkam are committed to continue collaborating in ensuring security. Public awareness not to be provoked by false news and to conduct constructive dialogue will greatly assist in supporting political stability. Restoring this trust is an important aspect for a better future in Southwest Papua.

In this context, it is important for all parties to continue to communicate and work together. Contributions from all elements of society, both at the local and provincial levels, are needed so that this election process runs smoothly. All parties are expected to be able to restrain themselves and prioritize dialogue in responding to the election results and existing disputes.

In closing, appreciation for the smooth implementation of the simultaneous Pilkada in Papua Barat Daya is very important. Support for the KPU and efforts to maintain security are positive steps that must continue to be encouraged. With the spirit of mutual respect and contribution, it is hoped that Papua Barat Daya can move forward with hope and peace, creating a better future for all.
