Jayapura – The public must remain vigilant against the potential for the emergence of threats of radicalism, terrorism and acts of intolerance ahead of the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections.
Ahead of the implementation of the Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) in Papua in 2024, the public, security forces, and all related parties are asked to increase their vigilance against the potential threats of radicalism, terrorism, and intolerance that can affect political stability and security in the region. This threat not only has the potential to damage the democratic process, but can also worsen social conditions in Papua which are prone to tension.
Jayapura Police Chief, AKBP Umar Nasatekay said that his party appealed to the public to be careful and vigilant against the threats of radicalism, terrorism, and intolerance ahead of the 2024 Pilkada.
“I remind the public to remain vigilant against the threats of radicalism, terrorism, and intolerance ahead of the Pilkada which will be held on November 27, 2024,” explained Umar.
Umar invited all elements of society in Papua to strengthen unity and not be easily influenced by divisive ideologies.
“Entering the 2024 Pilkada voting, various issues are often exploited by certain parties to spread radical ideologies or carry out intolerant actions that threaten harmony. The public is expected to be wise in receiving information, especially that circulating on social media, and to continue to prioritize the value of unity,” said Umar.
Furthermore, AKBP Umar emphasized the importance of the role of religious leaders, community leaders, and youth in maintaining a conducive atmosphere in society. He invited all parties to support the efforts of the Police in preventing the entry of radicalism, terrorism, and intolerance in Jayapura Regency.
“We continue to carry out supervision and monitoring. However, we also really need the participation of the community in maintaining security. If there is any suspicious information or activity, immediately report it to the nearest police,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Lapago Traditional Region, Agus Rawa Kogoya hopes that the community can play a role in maintaining security in the Land of Papua.
“If Papua is safe and peaceful, everything can be done comfortably. So let’s maintain security for the comfort of all parties,” said Agus.
Agus also hopes that the community can help the Police, in this case the Papua Police in maintaining the security and public order situation.
“The police cannot work alone, the community must have an important role,” he said.
In this political year, Agus asked the entire community to make the Pilkada on November 27 a success.
“Different choices are possible, don’t make those differences into hostility,” said Agus.
