2026 Provincial Minimum Wage Boosts Welfare, Government Encourages Expression of Aspirations Without Anarchic Demonstrations

Jakarta — The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a balance between improving worker welfare and business sustainability by establishing the 2026 Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP). This policy was formulated in response to national and regional economic dynamics, while also ensuring workers’ purchasing power remains strong at the start of the coming year.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the determination of the 2026 UMP went through a thorough and comprehensive formulation process, taking into account various economic indicators. He stated that the government is striving to provide a wage policy that is fair, sustainable, and able to address the real needs of workers amidst fluctuating prices of goods and services.

“The determination of the 2026 UMP serves as a benchmark to ensure workers receive wages that meet their needs and reflect rising prices in the community,” said Airlangga Hartarto.

He emphasized that the policy is not only oriented towards worker protection, but also considers the ability of businesses to continue growing and absorbing labor.

Airlangga further explained that the government has made adjustments to the components determining the minimum wage increase. These adjustments were made by considering inflation, economic growth, and employment conditions in each region. With this formulation, it is hoped that the 2026 Minimum Wage (UMP) will be an effective instrument for improving workers’ welfare without causing economic turmoil.

Furthermore, the government also encourages all workers and labor unions to express their aspirations in a peaceful, orderly, and constructive manner. Expressing opinions in public is a constitutional right of citizens guaranteed by law, but must be carried out while maintaining public order and security.

Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, emphasized that the presence of security forces at every demonstration is solely to serve the public and ensure freedom of expression responsibly.

“We are here to serve our brothers and sisters who are expressing their opinions,” said Senior Commissioner Reynold in Jakarta.

He explained that the demonstration regarding labor and wage issues was organized by the National Union Forum for Trade Unions and attended by various unions, including KSPSI, KPBI, MJH, KSBSI, KSPN, SARBUMUSI, ASPEK Indonesia, GSBI, FSBPI, ASPIRASI, OPSI, and GOBSI in the Silang Tenggara area of Monas, Gambir, Central Jakarta.

To ensure the event proceeded safely and conducively, all security personnel were not equipped with firearms and prioritized a humanistic and professional approach. This approach demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to creating a healthy dialogue between the government, workers, and the business world.

By establishing the 2026 Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP), which is oriented toward welfare and encourages the peaceful expression of aspirations, the government hopes to create harmonious industrial relations, maintain national stability, and create an economic climate conducive to sustainable development.
