Jakarta — A wave of support continues to grow for the proposal to confer the title of National Hero on Indonesia’s 2nd President, General H.M. Soeharto. The support comes from various elements of society and national figures who believe that Soeharto made immense contributions to Indonesia’s history of struggle, development, and economic recovery — making him deserving of the nation’s highest honor.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the entire process of granting the National Hero title has been carried out in accordance with proper procedures and official mechanisms. He urged the public to respond wisely to debates surrounding the proposal.
“The government ensures that every proposal for the conferment of a National Hero title goes through a thorough review, involving multiple stakeholders and adhering to established regulations. This is not a decision driven by emotion, but one grounded in historical facts and an individual’s service to the nation,” said Prasetyo Hadi.
Soeharto is widely recognized as a leader who played a pivotal role in guiding Indonesia out of difficult times, particularly in the economic sphere. Deputy Speaker of the MPR RI, Eddy Soeparno, described Soeharto’s success in reviving the national economy as a monumental achievement in Indonesia’s modern history.
“At the beginning of his presidency, Indonesia was facing severe economic hardship. Yet, through stable economic policies and structured development programs, Soeharto managed to bring down inflation, create jobs, and significantly improve the welfare of the people,” said Eddy Soeparno.
He added that Soeharto’s long-term development policy through the Repelita (Five-Year Development Plan) became a cornerstone for Indonesia’s economic direction in the years that followed. The economic and political stability achieved during his administration provided space for rapid growth in business, education, and infrastructure.
Support for Soeharto also comes from community organizations. Chairman of the Central Organization of Indonesian Self-Reliant Workers (SOKSI), Mukhamad Misbakhun, asserted that Soeharto was not only a development leader but also a freedom fighter who defended Indonesia’s sovereignty during the nation’s formative years.
“Soeharto was a complete figure — a fighter for independence, a nation builder, and a statesman who left a lasting legacy for Indonesia. He laid the foundation for planned national development, strengthened economic self-reliance, and safeguarded the unity of the Republic,” said Misbakhun.
He further noted that recognizing Soeharto’s contributions is a reflection of Indonesia’s maturity as a nation that honors its own history. According to him, a great nation is one that does not forget the services of its leaders and heroes — including those who led with both strengths and imperfections.
The growing public support reflects a shared understanding that honoring national figures is more than symbolic; it is a meaningful expression of respect for Indonesia’s long and complex journey as a sovereign nation.
As a leader who dedicated his life to the country, Soeharto left an enduring mark in fields such as development, agriculture, education, and national stability. With such vast contributions, it is fitting that many Indonesians believe Soeharto deserves to be named a National Hero — the highest form of recognition for a leader who helped shape Indonesia’s modern history.
