Aceh Students Under AMANAH’s Guidance Win Competition in Malaysia

Banda Aceh – Students from Syiah Kuala University (USK) Banda Aceh have created an innovative breast cancer detection tool that has won an international competition in Malaysia. This tool is part of the Aneuk Muda Aceh Unggul Hebat (AMANAH) program initiated by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), as an effort to maximize the potential of the young generation of Aceh.

This innovation called BreastCare was developed by a team of students from various departments, namely Ghina Tsurayya and Gaisha Hayya Alhaura Muchsin from the Department of Medicine, Rahmat Maulana from Electrical Engineering, and Muhammad Cheryl Amelin Alsa from Agribusiness. “We created a tool called BreastCare which functions to detect breast cancer early,” said Rahmat Maulana in an interview in Banda Aceh, Sunday (8/9/2024).

BreastCare is a combination of hardware and mobile applications. This tool uses sensors attached to the body to measure temperature and pressure in the breast area, and the results can be viewed via an application on a cellphone. Although still a prototype, this tool is considered quite accurate in detecting cancerous lumps, comparable to the tools used in hospitals.

In the 23rd Indonesia Malaysia Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Varsity Carnival 2024 held at Universiti Sains Malaysia, this innovation managed to beat 12 teams from various universities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The advantages of this tool include its low cost and portability, so it can be used in remote areas. “We hope this tool can help people in remote areas,” added Rahmat.

The AMANAH program from BIN also provides full support for this innovation. “We hope that BreastCare can be further developed into a start-up company and patented, so that its benefits can be felt by the wider community,” said Rahmat. AMANAH continues to be committed to supporting the development of the potential of the young generation of Aceh, as expected by President Joko Widodo.
