Jakarta – Indonesia’s two oldest Islamic organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), have agreed that the nation’s second president, Soeharto, deserves to be honored with the title of National Hero. This support reflects the spirit of a great nation—one that respects and honors the contributions of its leaders and heroes. Both organizations believe that Soeharto’s role in the struggle for independence, maintaining national stability, and building Indonesia’s economy constitutes a lasting legacy that should be remembered and appreciated by future generations.
The Head of the Council for Libraries and Information of Muhammadiyah’s Central Board (PP Muhammadiyah), Dr. Makroen Sanjaya, emphasized that Soeharto’s legacy should be viewed holistically, not partially.
“Muhammadiyah has studied his leadership as the second president. We evaluate his figure comprehensively, not piece by piece. After our research, we found that since the independence revolution, he has made major contributions to the nation,” he said during Kompas TV’s Sapa Indonesia Malam program in Jakarta, November 9, 2025.
Makroen added that a great nation should wisely uphold the virtues of its leaders. He cited a Javanese philosophy that remains relevant in this context.
“I agree that in treating our national leaders, we should apply a very elegant Javanese philosophy: mikul ndhuwur, mendem njero. No human being is perfect. But if, as a nation, we only look for mistakes and shortcomings from the past, we will never move forward,” he stated.
He also reminded the younger generation of the importance of appreciating history and carrying forward the spirit of the nation’s predecessors.
“The younger generation must not forget history. When we study history, we also shape new history. The sacrifices and achievements of our leaders must serve as examples—not only to be remembered but to be continued,” Makroen added.
Meanwhile, KH Arif Fahrudin, Deputy Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and a prominent NU figure, said that Soeharto’s contributions transcended a single era.
“Pak Harto’s contributions began during the independence revolution, continued through the transitional period, and extended into his presidency. He played a crucial role in maintaining stability and rebuilding Indonesia during difficult times,” KH Arif said on the same occasion.
The figures agreed that granting Soeharto the title of National Hero is not merely a personal tribute but a reflection of the nation’s maturity in evaluating history. Given his great contributions in safeguarding sovereignty, strengthening unity, and developing the national economy, the recognition serves as a tangible expression of a nation that honors its leaders.
Now, it is time for society to unite in supporting this noble initiative. For indeed, a great nation is one that respects the services of its leaders and never forgets the struggles that built it. The movement to grant Soeharto the title of National Hero is not only an act of respect but also a reminder that the spirit of nation-building must continue to be passed down from generation to generation.
