The 2024 Pilkada is getting closer, and as good citizens, we need to be wise in dealing with various issues that arise. One issue that often triggers tension is the politicization of religious issues. Polarization and politicization of religious issues can damage national unity and create unnecessary conflicts.

Polarization refers to the process by which society is divided into two opposing groups, while politicization is an attempt to use a particular issue, in terms of religion, for political gain. When religion is used as a tool for political gain, it will give rise to attitudes of intolerance, discrimination, and even violence which are certainly very dangerous for the integrity of a diverse nation like Indonesia.

Differences in political choices are often exploited to worsen relations between groups, and can damage social cohesion. In the context of Indonesia, which is rich in diversity, it is important to prioritize harmony so that the Pilkada becomes an event to strengthen democracy, not conflict.

The Head of the Surakarta City Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), Muhammad Mashuri, reminded that the implementation of the Pilkada must take place in a peaceful atmosphere, free from identity politics which often triggers polarization.

Prospective leaders must commit to not exploiting identity issues to gain support. Focusing on visions and programs that are relevant to the interests of the community is much more constructive. The community must also be critical of the information circulating, filtering narratives that can trigger hatred and conflict.

Religious figures have an important role in reducing tensions by mediating dialogue between groups, helping to build understanding and mutual respect. Civil society involvement is also vital, non-governmental organizations need to continue to facilitate cross-religious and cross-cultural discussions to strengthen social networks.

Indonesia has a long history of using religious issues for political gain. In several previous regional elections, we can see how religious issues were manipulated to sway public opinion, create polarization, and damage inter-group relations, resulting in a climate of distrust and hatred among the people. This experience should be a valuable lesson not to repeat the same mistakes.

The General Chairperson of the Jombang MUI, KH. Afifuddin Dimyati, emphasized the importance of brotherhood and friendship among fellow Muslims and citizens ahead of the Simultaneous Regional Elections on November 27, 2024. In the context of the general election, his statement is very relevant, considering the potential for division that often arises due to differences in choice.

As a society, we must reject identity politics that can worsen divisions. Instead, let’s focus on the values that unite us as one nation. In this context, Afifuddin’s statement is an important reminder to run the Pilkada with a spirit of brotherhood and friendship, in order to create a more harmonious and prosperous Indonesia.

Madiun Police Chief, AKBP Agus Dwi Suryanto also said that the implementation of the 2024 Pilkada which is getting closer and the need to be prepared to face high political dynamics is a crucial reminder. In the context of Indonesian politics, especially ahead of the general election, challenges such as social polarization, politicization of religion, and potential conflicts between supporters are indeed worth watching out for.

AKBP Agus Dwi’s hope that the situation remains safe, orderly, and conducive is an aspiration that must be supported by all elements of society. To realize this situation, there needs to be collaboration between the police, local government, and civil society. However, the success of maintaining order does not solely depend on the security forces, the community must also play an active role in creating a safe environment.

Collective awareness and political maturity are essential in facing the general election. The public must be able to filter information and not get caught up in narratives that incite hatred or divide. Political education and open discussions need to be encouraged so that the public understands the importance of unity in diversity.

The media also has a big responsibility in preventing polarization. In today’s information age, social media can be a very effective tool for spreading messages of peace and tolerance. However, the media can also be a trigger for polarization if it is not careful in conveying information. Therefore, it is important for journalists and content creators to verify information before sharing it and avoid sensationalism that can worsen the situation.

Political and community leaders must also be proactive in avoiding polarization by conveying messages that emphasize unity and respect for differences, not the other way around. In every campaign, it is important to emphasize positive programs and visions, rather than attacking political opponents using religious issues. In this way, leaders can be good examples for the community.

The 2024 Pilkada is an important momentum for the Indonesian nation. We have a collective responsibility to maintain unity and avoid polarization and politicization of religious issues. Through dialogue, education, and proactive actions from all parties, we can create a conducive climate for the implementation of peaceful elections. Let’s prioritize the interests of the nation over momentary political interests, so that Indonesia remains a comfortable and safe home for all.
