Be Wise in Facing the Issue, Don’t Let Provocation on August 28 Divide Our National Harmony

Jakarta – Ahead of the planned demonstrations on August 28 across various regions, the public is urged to remain calm and not be easily provoked by circulating issues in public spaces, whether directly or through social media. This moment is crucial to maintaining national harmony, so it is not tainted by the interests of certain groups aiming to divide the unity of the nation.

Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Kombes Pol Susatyo Purnomo Condro, advised the public not to fall for hoaxes spreading on social media and information that could incite unrest. He warned that demonstrators must conduct their actions peacefully and orderly. Burning tires, damaging public facilities, or blocking roads are prohibited.

“Do not be provoked by negative news. Be wise in receiving information and keep unity intact. Feel free to express your opinion, but within the framework of law and order. We are here to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly,” he said.

Provocative narratives have recently been widely circulated, ranging from attempts to sway public opinion to calls that cause unrest. However, security stability can only be maintained if the people are united, prioritize dialogue, and voice aspirations peacefully and constitutionally.

Previously, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, welcomed public demonstrations but emphasized that they must remain orderly and safe. She assured that the DPR is ready to openly discuss with the public regarding demands that remain public concerns.

“There is the Public Aspirations Agency here to accommodate grievances, complaints, and to listen to aspirations, as well as understand why these issues occur,” Puan explained.

Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, stated that demonstrations are allowed as a means to convey aspirations. However, the most important thing is that there is no anarchic behavior behind the demonstrations to ensure that aspirations can be optimally received by the government.

“So, maintain order, don’t let anarchic acts happen; expressing opinions is allowed,” Tito said.

The public needs to realize that provocations are often deliberately played to create political unrest and distrust towards the government. If left unchecked, this will only harm the broader community, especially workers, students, and business actors who need a conducive situation for their daily activities.

As August 28 approaches, let us guard our hearts, minds, and actions to avoid falling into the trap of parties wanting to exploit the situation. Unity is far more valuable than temporary interests. Only through togetherness can Indonesia continue to move forward toward a peaceful, prosperous, and just future.
