Jakarta – In the holy month of Ramadan, the potential for security disturbances and acts of terrorism must be watched out for by all elements of society and security forces. The founder of the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) Crisis Center, Ken Setiawan, reminded that although the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) group has disbanded and re-declared its loyalty to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), the threat of terrorism still exists.
It was emphasized that all perpetrators of terrorism who have been arrested by Densus 88 actually have the same roots as NII. Various arrests that have occurred in areas such as West Sumatra, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Bali show that this network is still active and has the potential to carry out attacks.
“There is a belief among them that carrying out acts of terror in the month of Ramadan and dying in the act will take them to heaven without being reckoned with their families,” said Ken.
Ken also reminded that acts of terror had occurred during the month of Ramadan in previous years, such as the bomb explosion at the Gemblegan Security Post, Solo, and the suicide bomb attack at the Solo Police Headquarters.
South Sulawesi Police Chief, Inspector General Yudhiawan, said that in addition to the threat of terrorism, social tensions had also increased in several areas at the beginning of Ramadan. In Makassar, street crimes such as attacks using bows and arrows and clashes between youth groups occurred again. His party responded to this situation by directly leading large-scale patrols to maintain security.
“I want to ensure that the situation in Makassar City remains conducive during the holy month of Ramadan. This patrol aims to prevent street crime and eliminate social ills. The youths who gather on the side of the road should immediately return home so that unwanted incidents do not occur,” said Yudhiawan.
In Papua Pegunungan, the elected Deputy Governor, Ones Pahabol, invited all residents to maintain peace during the month of Ramadan. He emphasized the importance of the values of brotherhood and tolerance in creating a harmonious atmosphere in the eight districts in the region.
“All residents in Papua Pegunungan must be able to maintain peace when their Muslim brothers and sisters are fasting. We are all created by God Almighty, there is no difference between us,” said Ones.
He also reminded that the teachings of love and brotherhood are the key to building a peaceful and harmonious social life.
