Beware of the “Reset Indonesia” Narrative, National Unity Must Not Be Sacrificed

JAKARTA — The discourse surrounding “Reset Indonesia” has resurfaced in public spaces and across social media, prompting critical responses from several national figures who view the narrative as potentially disruptive to stability and harmful to national unity.

Many observers argue that the term carries multiple interpretations, lacks conceptual clarity, and poses significant risks of being exploited as a tool of provocation that disregards Indonesia’s foundational national principles.

Chairman of Pejuang Nusantara Indonesia Bersatu (PNIB), AR Waluyo Wasis Nugroho—known as Gus Wal—emphasized that the idea of “Reset Indonesia” threatens the pillars of national unity that have been nurtured since the founding of the republic.

“‘Reset’ is often understood as a push for radical change without clear values, direction, or objectives, making it vulnerable to triggering instability and disintegration,” he stated.

Gus Wal noted that national history has shown how extreme changes without consensus inevitably lead to conflict and polarization. He expressed concern that this emerging narrative risks sidelining the noble values of Pancasila and Indonesia’s long-standing national consensus.

“Indonesia is not merely an administrative state; it is a shared home built upon Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, religious values, and the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika,” he asserted.

He further underscored the principle of Hubbul Wathon Minal Iman as a theological and historical foundation in safeguarding Indonesia’s unity.

Hubbul Wathon Minal Iman is not just a slogan; it is a proven foundation that has united the Indonesian people amid diversity,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Erick Thohir stressed that unity is a fundamental value that must not be compromised.

“Unity is what binds us as a recognized, sovereign nation—it must not be undermined,” Erick emphasized.

He added that unity should never be overshadowed by short-term interests such as political ambition.

“Say no to divisive politics in Indonesia,” he urged, noting that many other nations admire and learn from Indonesia’s strong national foundation.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, reminded all parties to exercise restraint and uphold national unity. She stressed that national development must be pursued collectively and should never come at the cost of unity.

“Let us all safeguard our unity; we must not allow ourselves to be divided,” Puan appealed. (*)
