Clean Energy Transition Boosts Government Efforts to Achieve Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta — The Indonesian government is intensifying its efforts to accelerate the clean energy transition as part of its long-term strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency and strengthen national resilience. This step is not only about replacing fossil fuels, but also shifting the development paradigm toward affordable, sustainable, and independent energy.

PLN’s Director of Project Management and Renewable Energy, Suroso Isnandar, stated that the current direction of national energy policy emphasizes the importance of a balance between sustainability and energy independence, while also aligning with national interests.

“Our President’s message is that, in addition to the energy transition, we must not focus solely on clean energy transitions, but also on energy self-sufficiency. Energy self-sufficiency must be a strategic foundation,” he said.

Furthermore, future energy sector development must ensure that Indonesia is not dependent on energy imports. He believes that energy self-sufficiency is part of national sovereignty.

“Of course, in carrying out the energy transition, we must always adhere to the basic philosophy of energy security,” Suroso said.

Meanwhile, in support of President Prabowo’s government’s vision of energy self-sufficiency, Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) is actively contributing to the development of clean and environmentally friendly energy. Natural gas is known as a clean energy source that is relatively more environmentally friendly than other fossil fuels such as coal and oil.

Natural gas has lower greenhouse gas emissions than coal and oil. Combustion of natural gas produces approximately 50% less CO2 than coal and 30% less than oil. Natural gas is a relatively clean energy source because it can be used as a fuel for power plants, industry, and transportation, with lower emissions.

PGN President Director Arief Kurnia Risdianto stated that PGN maintains the reliability of natural gas services for all sectors to strengthen national energy self-sufficiency. PGN optimizes natural gas supply and distributes it to meet the energy needs of the Indonesian people.

“Therefore, PGN also continues to forge intensive synergies with the government to ensure the sustainability of natural gas services while promoting broader benefits for the community,” he explained.

As a subholding of Pertamina Gas, PGN has initiated the provision of clean and environmentally friendly energy across various sectors. PGN provides natural gas to all levels of society through the Household (RT) gas network (Jargas). Currently, PGN serves more than 814,000 households across Indonesia.

Jargas provides direct benefits in the form of practical, safe, 24/7, environmentally friendly energy, and supports the government’s subsidy reduction program.

“PGN is ready to work together to develop the Jargas network on a massive scale,” explained Arief.
