The People’s Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) confirmed that it had canceled the Draft Law on Regional Head Elections (RUU Pilkada). Because of this cancellation, it is clear that the implementation of the democratic party at the regional level remains subject to the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK).

Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, confirmed that the ratification of the regional election draft law (RUU) would be canceled and the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) regarding the regional elections would apply.

Due to this cancellation, at the registration stage of regional head candidates for the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada on August 27, the Constitutional Court’s decision will still be implemented, namely the results of the judicial review in granting the lawsuit of the Labor Party and the Gelora Party.

Apart from that, the Indonesian House of Representatives also confirmed that there will absolutely be no plenary meeting in the near future, especially with the overnight speeding system as the propaganda issues circulating have recently been circulating on various social media.

Moreover, the decision to cancel the Pilkada Bill is clear evidence that there is absolutely no effort whatsoever from any party to want certain parties or certain individuals, especially in certain areas, as in the allegations that have also been circulating.

The result of the decision taken is to remain obedient and upright in accordance with the constitution as the Constitutional Court’s decision is final and binding, and applies in all regions of the country without exception.

From the start, the Legislative Body’s (Baleg) efforts to roll out the Pilkada Bill were not at all aimed at passing certain parties or candidates and preventing certain other parties, but this policy had an emergency nature considering that regional level political contestation would soon take place.

The initial aim of enacting the Regional Election Bill itself is to ensure that there is no legal confusion, so that the policy becomes a reference for implementing Regional Head Elections.

Likewise, Head of the Presidential Communications Office Hasan Nasbi confirmed that the government will follow the applicable regulations regarding the 2024 Regional Elections. The government will follow the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) regarding the conditions for the Regional Elections if the DPR does not pass the Regional Election Bill at the end of next August.
