JAKARTA – The government continues to strengthen its commitment to food self-sufficiency as the primary foundation of national economic growth. Various strategic programs implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, along with adequate national rice stocks, are strong indicators that Indonesia is on the right track to achieving food self-sufficiency while expanding new economic opportunities for the community.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that the Ministry’s priority for 2026 is to maintain sustainable food self-sufficiency by increasing production across all sectors. This strategic program includes the creation of new rice fields, land optimization, irrigation enhancement, farm road construction, and the provision of superior seeds and agricultural machinery to increase production efficiency.
“To maintain sustainable food self-sufficiency, the Ministry of Agriculture’s priority program plan for 2026 focuses on increasing the production of rice, corn, and other strategic commodities,” Amran said.
He explained that the 2026 rice production target is projected to reach 34.77 million tons, accompanied by significant increases in other commodities such as corn, chilies, shallots, sugar cane, and various strategic plantation products. Strengthening production capacity, coupled with downstream commodity processing, is considered capable of creating added value and opening up investment opportunities in the agricultural sector.
“The revitalization of the fertilizer factory has reduced the price of subsidized fertilizer by 20 percent and increased the available volume by 700,000 tons, thus strengthening the foundation for increasing farmer production,” he explained.
A strong indicator of food self-sufficiency is also evident in the availability of national rice stocks, which have reached 3.8 million tons in the warehouses of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog). Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani emphasized that this amount is more than sufficient to meet national needs, eliminating the need for imports. “The public need not worry or be uncertain, rice stocks are sufficient and imports are unnecessary. Indonesian farmers are becoming more proficient, and their technology is advancing, resulting in increased production,” he said.
Rizal also stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to stop rice imports is in line with the increase in national rice production, which is projected to reach 34.77 million tons by 2025.
“According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the 13.54 percent increase in production compared to the previous year indicates significant progress in the agricultural sector,” Rizal said.
The government is optimistic that consolidating programs and strengthening agricultural infrastructure will be a key driver of more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
