Jakarta – The 44th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly or AIPA on August 5-11 will soon be held in Jakarta. Indonesia is hosting a session that brings together ASEAN parliaments, for the seventh time.
“By hosting it for the 7th time, of course we hope that Indonesia will be able to exert influence in both the ASEAN region and the Asia-Pacific region,” said Head of the BKSAP Regional Cooperation Desk at the DPR RI, Putu Supadma Rudana.
Putu said the theme being carried out at the 44th General Assembly of AIPA in Jakarta was a responsive parliament for a stable and prosperous ASEAN, whose concept is more towards green economy.
“Currently the world tends to see only high economic growth parameters, and is considered the only positive benchmark, where GDP (gross domestic product) is the sole reference,” said Putu Supadma.
Meanwhile, DPR Member Luluk Nur Hamidah welcomed the DPR’s initiative to recommend increasing the quota for women’s representation in local and national government level positions in the upcoming 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Session.
“It is important when we bring this issue up at the ASEAN level so that the status of women’s representation within ASEAN can also be much improved,” Luluk told the media.
Luluk also assessed that it would be a success for Indonesia as the holder of the 2023 ASEAN Chair if it could encourage the birth of recommendation points that could intervene to increase women’s representation in the upcoming 44th AIPA.
The 44th General Assembly of AIPA in Jakarta shows Indonesia’s commitment to giving full attention to overcoming problems. These include democracy, human rights, politics, the economy, socio-culture, youth, environment and issues of gender equality. [-ed]
