Government Accelerates Nickel Downstreaming to Support Green Industry and Sustainable Economy

Jakarta – The government is increasingly focused on accelerating nickel downstreaming as part of its efforts to support the development of green industry and sustainable economy.
This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s ideals in making Indonesia a major economic power in the world that does not only rely on raw materials, but is also able to process natural resources in a more valuable way.
The Indonesian Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) together with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are strengthening cooperation in developing green industry and downstreaming of critical minerals, especially nickel. This cooperation aims to increase the competitiveness of the national industry through a sustainability-based and environmentally friendly approach.
The Director General of Resilience, Regionalization, and International Industrial Access (KPAII) of the Ministry of Industry, Tri Supondy, welcomed UNIDO in strengthening the standards for environmentally friendly industrial areas.
“We welcome UNIDO’s initiative in strengthening the standardization of environmentally-based industrial areas. This is in line with the policy of the Ministry of Industry which is currently drafting regulations related to environmentally-aware industrial areas,” Tri Supondy.
UNIDO Managing Director, Ciyong Zou, appreciated Indonesia’s steps in developing a green industrial ecosystem and mineral downstreaming. According to Zou, Indonesia’s initiative to utilize the potential of mineral resources sustainably shows the country’s strong commitment to environmentally friendly economic growth and a more inclusive industry.
“Indonesia has great potential in the manufacturing industry and mineral resources. UNIDO is ready to support the strengthening of sustainable industrial infrastructure, including through technology transfer and technical assistance, ” said Zou.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Setia Diarta emphasized the importance of strengthening the nickel industry supply chain in Indonesia. This strengthening is needed to support more efficient downstreaming, increase competitiveness, and create added value for the domestic industry.
“We want to ensure that nickel downstreaming does not stop at the production of raw materials, but also includes the development of battery recycling technology. That way, the national electric vehicle industry can be more independent and competitive in the global market, ” said Setia Diarta.
The Indonesian government is committed to creating policies that support investment in the green industry sector, as well as providing incentives for companies that focus on innovation and clean technology. This is expected to create new jobs, strengthen national industrial resilience, and increase Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global market.
