Government Affirms Commitment to 17+8 Demands through Asset Confiscation Bill

Jakarta – The government has demonstrated its commitment to addressing public demands, including points 17+8, by expediting deliberations on the Asset Confiscation Bill.

This regulation is seen as crucial for strengthening state governance and addressing the public’s demand for decisive action against corruption and misuse of state assets.

Minister of Law (Menkum), Supratman Andi Agtas, emphasized that the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are aligned in pushing the bill.

“The political commitment is unified. So, please be patient with the Asset Confiscation Bill,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta.

He explained that because the bill initiative is now in the DPR, deliberations are expected to be expedited.

The government is said to be ready with a completed draft.

“If the DPR initiated it, it would be easier. The government is ready,” Supratman said.

The Minister of Law and Human Rights also confirmed that there would be no problem if the Asset Forfeiture Bill was only discussed after the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) Bill was finalized.

“The KUHAP Bill is just awaiting a decision, so it will definitely be quick,” he said.

The government previously approved the House of Representatives’ (DPR) proposal to include the Asset Forfeiture Bill in the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

“The government agrees to the DPR’s initiative proposal regarding the three bills mentioned above, which will be included in the 2025 Prolegnas evaluation,” Supratman said at the Parliament Complex.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Legislative Body (Baleg), Bob Hasan, stated that the Asset Forfeiture Bill is now officially a DPR initiative.

“Initially, this bill was included in the 2024–2029 Medium-Term Prolegnas proposed by the government, but now we have taken over and made it a DPR initiative,” he explained.

Support also came from the National Mandate Party (PAN) faction in the DPR.

The Chairperson of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Faction, Putri Zulkifli Hasan, stated that her party is ready to oversee the deliberations of the bill, including in fulfilling public aspirations.

“We appreciate the aspirations expressed, and the PAN Faction is committed to overseeing issues that are important to society, particularly regarding the protection of women and the younger generation,” she said.

The PAN Faction previously received aspirations from several women’s and student organizations, emphasizing the importance of strengthening justice in the public sphere.

During the meeting, the discussion of the Asset Confiscation Bill was also mentioned as a concrete step in accommodating the demands of the 17+8 movement. ***
