Government Confident of Creating 276,000 Jobs Through Downstreaming Projects

Jakarta — The administration of President Prabowo Subianto is preparing 18 downstreaming projects valued at IDR 618 trillion, expected to generate 276,000 new high-quality jobs.

The President highlighted the strategic role of BP Danantara in managing state assets. With sufficient domestic capacity, the government does not need to rely on foreign investment.

“We have the capability now. So, as I said, the main focus that we must start and implement is downstreaming. These 18 projects will create 276,000 quality jobs with an investment of IDR 618 trillion,” he stated at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor, on Monday (2/2/2026).

President Prabowo explained that the projects include the development of bauxite-based aluminum smelters, stainless steel slabs from nickel, oleoresin production, tilapia fillet processing, integrated solar modules, and coal gasification for Dimethyl Ether (DME).

In addition, the projects cover copper rod, wire, and tube production; palm oil-based oleofood; seaweed processing; and biojet fuel from used cooking oil. In the minerals and energy sector, the government is also promoting Buton asphalt, iron and steel from iron sand, manganese sulfate, chemical-grade alumina, and chlor-alkali plants. The President added that domestic oil refineries and oil storage facilities will also be built.

President Prabowo emphasized that downstreaming is not limited to mining and energy sectors. Other local resource-based industries are also targeted, such as nata de coco, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and coconut flour, fish fillet processing, and carrageenan from seaweed. Collectively, these downstreaming projects are projected to create approximately 276,000 jobs.

Earlier, on January 4, 2026, President Prabowo received Rosan Roeslani, CEO of Danantara Indonesia and Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board, at his residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java.

During the meeting, several downstreaming projects were discussed, including five projects ready for groundbreaking early next month in various provinces across Indonesia, with a total investment of US$6 billion (around IDR 100 trillion).

The discussion also covered the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) projects, which convert waste into energy such as electricity, heat, or fuel using technologies like incineration, gasification, or anaerobic digestion. These initiatives are expected not only to reduce open waste volumes but also to provide significant economic benefits.
