Government Reaffirms Strong Commitment to Prevent Stunting in Papua for a Healthy Generation

Jayapura – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing stunting with the launch of the Genting program (Foster Parent Movement to Prevent Stunting) held at the Papua Governor’s Office courtyard on Monday (10/11/2025). The program is led directly by Papua’s Deputy Governor, Aryoko Rumaropen, alongside leaders of Regional Government Agencies (OPD), with a joint signing of commitments to become Foster Parents (OTA).

The initiative represents a concrete step by the local government to strengthen cross-sector collaboration and accelerate the development of healthy and productive human resources in Papua. Aryoko Rumaropen emphasized that Genting is not merely a ceremonial program but a long-term strategy to build a stunting-free generation in Papua.

“We are starting this year, and it is already included in the transitional RPJMD. Over the next five years, we will align it with Papua’s development direction towards 2030,” said Aryoko Rumaropen.

Genting is part of the Papua Provincial Government’s 100-day priority agenda. Its main focus includes institutional strengthening, improving health and education services, enhancing food security, and empowering communities. Through the foster parent concept, the government hopes to create a social movement that encourages active community participation in reducing stunting rates in Papua.

According to Aryoko, success in reducing stunting does not rely solely on the health sector but also on support from various elements of society. “This program is an initial example of inter-agency synergy. After one year, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to measure the program’s impact,” he added.

This initiative aligns with national targets under Presidential Regulation No. 72 of 2021 on the Acceleration of Stunting Reduction, which aims to lower stunting rates to 14 percent by 2024. Although data from the 2024 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) shows a national stunting decrease to 19.8 percent from 21.6 percent in 2022, Papua remains one of the regions with high prevalence, making collaborative efforts essential.

In its implementation, the Genting program will also integrate with Posyandu activities as the frontline of basic community services. Posyandu cadres will be empowered to conduct early detection of stunting risks, provide nutritional counseling, and monitor child growth and development in every district.

“Prevent stunting starting now, because the nation’s future comes from healthy children today,” Aryoko Rumaropen emphasized.

With an approach that directly engages communities and involves all stakeholders, the Papua Provincial Government is optimistic that the Genting Movement can strengthen family resilience and improve the quality of future generations in Papua. The program serves as concrete proof that stunting reduction is not only the responsibility of the health sector but a collective movement of all community layers to create a healthy, strong, and prosperous Papua.
