Government Strengthens Energy Self-Sufficiency for Inclusive Economic Growth

Jakarta – The government continues to affirm its commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency as one of the national development priorities. This effort is not only focused on energy independence but is also directed as a driving force for economic inclusion across all levels of society.

PT PLN (Persero) further reinforces its commitment to supporting the national energy transition by accelerating the development of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP). This initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision to realize energy independence based on domestic resources.

PLN’s Director of Project Management and New Renewable Energy, Suroso Isnandar, stated that the mandate to develop PLTP is included in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025–2034.

The government targets a PLTP capacity of up to 5.2 gigawatts (GW) across Indonesia. PLN is committed to ensuring that all projects run smoothly and provide broad benefits.

“Indonesia’s geothermal potential is very large and spread across many regions. We will optimize the development of PLTP projects that have been studied so that their presence has a real impact, both for communities around the projects and PLN customers nationwide,” said Suroso.

He added that PLN has prepared several strategies to accelerate PLTP development in various regions.

One of the steps taken is to establish geothermal steam purchase agreements with competent developers in the field.

“We ensure that geothermal projects are executed together with strategic partners who have the competence and vision aligned with PLN’s to provide clean energy at affordable prices for the nation,” said Suroso.

“All processes are carried out transparently, accountably, and in accordance with regulations. Additionally, we apply the principle of fairness of partnership to create a healthy and sustainable investment climate,” Suroso added.

Suroso also mentioned that PLN is currently preparing several strategic geothermal projects, including two PLTP projects in Bengkulu.

These projects are designed to strengthen the renewable energy mix and improve the reliability of electricity supply.

The Kepahiang PLTP, with a capacity of 110 megawatts (MW), located in Kepahiang and Rejang Lebong Regencies, is currently in the final stage of selecting strategic partners. The electricity produced will be distributed to the Pekalongan Substation (GI) in Kepahiang Regency. Additionally, PLN is developing the Hululais PLTP project with a capacity of 110 MW in Lebong Regency. This project is targeted to commence commercial operations (COD) by 2028.

The Hululais PLTP will utilize geothermal energy from the Geothermal Working Area (WKP) managed by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), with electricity transmitted to the Pekalongan Substation in Kepahiang Regency.

“Through the development of PLTP projects in various regions, PLN not only supports national energy security and the transition to green energy but also drives regional economic growth through local business involvement and job absorption,” concluded Suroso.

With these efforts, the government is optimistic that energy self-sufficiency will not only strengthen national sovereignty but also lead Indonesia into an era of inclusive economic growth.
