Government Urges Young Generation to Respect National Symbols, Without Pirate Flags

Jakarta – The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of national symbols, particularly the Red and White Flag, amid the rising trend of hoisting pirate flags from the Japanese animated series One Piece ahead of the nation’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.

This phenomenon has drawn serious attention from the government following several reports and social media documentation showing pirate flags being hoisted — in some cases placed alongside or even higher than the Red and White Flag. The government views this as a misunderstanding of the limits of expression and freedom of speech in public spaces.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the government does not prohibit young people from expressing their love for popular culture. However, he stressed that such expressions must not be done in ways that demean or compete with the position of national symbols.

“We urge the entire public, especially the younger generation, to respect national symbols. Creativity is legitimate, but it must not cross the boundaries of national ethics. The Red and White Flag is a symbol of sovereignty. Nothing should be placed at the same height, let alone higher,” Prasetyo said.

The government also highlighted the legal aspect regarding the use of non-state symbols that could potentially conflict with Law Number 24 of 2009 on the Flag, Language, and State Emblem. Hoisting flags other than the Red and White in public spaces within a state context is considered capable of creating misunderstandings and diminishing the meaning of Independence Day celebrations.

“This is not about liking or disliking foreign culture. We are celebrating the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. National symbols should be given the highest place and respected by all,” Prasetyo affirmed.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan pointed out that raising flags other than the Red and White during Independence Day celebrations could violate Law Number 24 of 2009 on the Flag, Language, and State Emblem.

“Such actions can be subject to legal sanctions if proven to demean the honor of the Red and White Flag,” he explained.

On the other hand, the government sees the viral trend of pirate flag hoisting on social media as a reflection of young people’s growing enthusiasm for community and digital culture. However, during national moments such as the August 17 celebrations, the public is urged to prioritize national values and avoid mixing pop culture symbols with state symbols in ceremonial contexts.

The government also called on community leaders, educators, and parents to help educate the younger generation about the meaning and status of national symbols in the life of the nation. This effort is deemed essential to ensure that the spirit of nationalism continues to grow.
