Jakarta – Indonesian President Joko Widodo reminded the world community not to doubt Indonesia’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions and contributing to a greener world.
He expressed this while attending the Opening Ceremony of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) in Jakarta, Thursday (5/9/2024).
Indonesia, according to the President, has abundant green energy potential reaching more than 3,600 GW. In addition, mangrove forests in Indonesia covering 3.3 million hectares are able to absorb carbon better than tropical rainforests.
“Indonesia has great potential in carbon absorption. Our mangrove forests, Indonesia’s mangrove forests are the largest in the world, covering 3.3 million hectares which are able to absorb carbon 8 to 12 times better than tropical rainforests,” said President Jokowi.
At that moment, the Head of State explained that Indonesia is very open to partnering with anyone to maximize the potential for a greener world, to provide equitable access to green energy, and to encourage inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
“This ISF forum can be a place where knowledge meets, a place where experiences meet, a place where resources meet, which can be shared capital in collaborating to face existing climate challenges. Because collaboration is not an option, humanity is not an option, but a necessity and an obligation,” said Jokowi.
Meanwhile, one of the things that was also discussed in ISF 2024 was related to the plan to export electricity from Indonesia to Singapore. After the agreement was reached, the Indonesian and Singaporean governments immediately signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the sustainability forum.
“The value of this electricity export agreement could reach millions of United States (US) dollars,” said Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), Rachmat Kaimuddin.
According to him, as a host, Indonesia not only provides a platform for global discussions, but also shows its commitment to the sustainability agenda through various initiatives.
ISF 2024 presents an exhibition of green technology and innovation that promotes smart and sustainable solutions. This exhibition provides an opportunity for Indonesian companies to showcase their environmentally friendly technologies and products, as well as expand their international business networks.
The success of ISF 2024 not only reflects Indonesia’s ability to organize large-scale international events, but also confirms the country’s position as a leader in the global sustainability movement.
