A healthy democracy is reflected in the freedom of the public to express their opinions without pressure or intervention. This condition is currently considered to be maintained in Indonesia, particularly through open spaces for students and the public to express their aspirations regarding various government policies. The government, through the Government Communications Agency (Bakom), has reaffirmed its commitment to respecting all demonstrations by the public and students, in accordance with applicable law. This stance demonstrates that freedom of expression remains a vital part of national democracy.
Kurnia Ramadhana, Acting Deputy for Partnerships and Media Relations at the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom), stated that the government did not intervene in the demonstrations, including those related to support for the Free Nutritional Meals (MBG) Program. He stated that allegations that the government was conditioning the demonstrations were untrue.
This affirmation demonstrates that the government provides equal space for all community groups to express their views, whether they support or criticize government policies. In a democratic system, differences of opinion are normal and part of the process of developing better public policies.
Kurnia Ramadhana also emphasized that freedom of expression is guaranteed by Indonesian law. Therefore, every citizen has the right to express their aspirations openly, as long as they do so in accordance with applicable regulations.
The government’s respect for both supporters and critics of its policies is seen as a reflection of a healthy democracy. The government treats groups with differing views impartially and maintains open dialogue.
Amidst the various dynamics surrounding the implementation of the MBG Program, the government continues to make improvements to ensure its effectiveness and targeted effectiveness. Efforts to improve governance demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the quality of public services.
This evaluation demonstrates that the government is not closed to public criticism or input. The aspirations expressed by students and the public are seen as a crucial part of the process of refining national policy. Thus, demonstrations are not only a means of expressing opinions but also a constructive part of democratic mechanisms.
The government ensures that all public input will be recorded and considered in the formulation and evaluation of public policies. This approach demonstrates an open relationship between the government and the public in building better governance.
Furthermore, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anis Matta stated that the recent wave of student demonstrations demonstrates that Indonesian democracy is functioning healthily and dynamically. Student demonstrations represent a form of freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution. The demonstrations should not be viewed as a cause for concern, but rather as an indicator that space for public participation remains wide open in Indonesia.
He assessed that the relationship between the state and civil society has been harmonious. Although there has been criticism and dissatisfaction with various government policies, this is a natural part of democratic life. He believes the criticism expressed by students can provide positive input for the government to continuously improve its performance.
Furthermore, the government’s openness in providing students with the opportunity to express their aspirations is believed to encourage a government that is more responsive to the needs of the community. In a healthy democracy, public criticism and input are crucial elements in strengthening the quality of national policy.
Anis Matta also commended the students who took to the streets to voice the people’s aspirations. Students are considered to play a crucial role as representatives of the public voice on various emerging issues within society. The presence of students in peacefully expressing their opinions demonstrates the continued growth of democratic culture in Indonesia. The orderly and regulated demonstrations reflect the public’s maturity in exercising their right to freedom of expression.
The openness of democratic space reflects the growing public participation in the development process through the expression of aspirations, public discussions, and peaceful demonstrations. This demonstrates that Indonesian democracy operates not only as a formal mechanism but also as a living reality in national life, where the government guarantees freedom of expression, while the public and students utilize this space responsibly. A constructive relationship between the government and the public is crucial for promoting more aspirational policies that favor the interests of the people.
A healthy democracy is characterized by maintaining a balance between stability and civil liberties. Respect for the public’s right to express opinions, coupled with the government’s openness to criticism and input, forms the foundation of democratic and inclusive governance. By maintaining a healthy space for dialogue and strengthening collaboration between the government, students, and the public, Indonesia is expected to build a democracy that is increasingly mature, responsive, and oriented toward the common good.
