Indonesia Hosts the 19th PUIC Conference: Welcoming Delegations and Strengthening Islamic World Diplomacy

Jakarta – The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) is serving as the host of the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), held from May 12 to 15, 2025, at the DPR Building in Jakarta. This event also marks the 25th anniversary of PUIC since its establishment in 1999.

Speaker of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, stated that hosting this conference is not merely an administrative honor, but a significant opportunity for Indonesia to demonstrate leadership in Islamic world diplomacy that prioritizes democracy, inclusivity, and concrete solutions.

“We are ready to warmly welcome the delegates and ensure that this event becomes a forum for diplomacy that goes beyond ceremonial formalities,” said Puan.

She emphasized that the conference aims to strengthen solidarity among OIC member states and to promote the role of parliaments in addressing global challenges. PUIC is committed to fostering inter-parliamentary cooperation among member countries in political, economic, social, and cultural fields.

Indonesia, currently holding the presidency of the 19th PUIC, has chosen the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” highlighting the importance of robust and transparent governance in building resilience across the Islamic world.

Puan expressed hope that key issues such as the independence of Palestine and regional peace will become central topics of discussion.

“Parliamentary diplomacy must be followed by concrete action in facing global challenges,” she asserted.

Approximately 500 participants from OIC member states, including several observer countries, are expected to attend the conference. Puan also noted that the presence of parliamentary leaders, including those from ASEAN nations such as Malaysia, signifies the success of Indonesia’s hosting of PUIC.

She hopes the event will further strengthen relations among OIC member states and promote more coordinated cooperation across various sectors.

Puan also remarked that the spirit of global solidarity—once exemplified during the Asian-African Conference 70 years ago—would serve as a fundamental pillar in this PUIC gathering.

Thus, she hopes PUIC 2025 will serve as a platform to uphold humanistic values and create a more just and sovereign Islamic world.

Meanwhile, Iran has shown great enthusiasm for the conference, sending 62 delegates, including its parliamentary speaker.
