Jakarta – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) stated that Indonesia is pushing for the strengthening of ASEAN institutions through the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta on 5-7 September 2023.
The Director General of ASEAN Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sidharto R. Suryodipuro said the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta will continue discussions on strengthening organizational institutions so that they are able to answer challenges for the next 20 years.
“We want to lay the foundation for future ASEAN cooperation. “To achieve that, we have to strengthen institutions and various working mechanisms,” said Sidharto.
Furthermore, he said there were several aspects that he wanted to strengthen, such as increasing human resources in this case the ASEAN Community, dialogues on human rights and maritime cooperation between member countries.
“Indonesia always produces agreements or what is commonly called the ASEAN Concord at each of its chairmen in ASEAN. Indonesia previously served as chairman in 1976, 2003 and 2011,” he explained.
The 2023 ASEAN Summit in Jakarta will not only be attended by ASEAN leaders, but also external partners such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia and India.
Previously, Indonesian President Joko Widodo emphasized the importance of ASEAN solidity and regional stability in order to face global challenges and realize ASEAN as a center of growth. In particular, the President emphasized the importance of implementing the Five Point Consensus in resolving the conflict in Myanmar.
“We hope that the problem in Myanmar will be resolved soon because it concerns humanity, concerns the people of Myanmar, and in reality it is not easy, it is very complex, the conflict is no longer one conflict with two, but with three, with four, with five, so it takes time. And that can happen if all stakeholders in Myanmar are willing, have the same will to solve the problem. If not, it is very difficult,” he said.
