Legal Experts Assess President Prabowo’s Emphasis on Ethical Commitment in Law Enforcement

Jakarta – The government’s efforts to realize clean and corruption-free governance have once again received positive attention in a national talk show featuring University of Indonesia legal expert Akhiar Salmi.

In an interview with a private radio station in Jakarta, Akhiar emphasized that the direction of the government under President Prabowo Subianto shows a strong commitment to building a legal system that is imbued with integrity, responsiveness, and in the interests of the nation.

“I welcome Mr. Prabowo’s statement to uphold clean governance, starting with himself, the governor, the regent, and all levels of government down to the lowest level,” Akhiar said.

According to Akhiar, President Prabowo’s assertiveness in openly stating his willingness to be prosecuted if he commits a violation is an extraordinary step that is very rarely shown by any national leader.

“The President’s commitment to upholding the law impartially is a concrete example. When a leader has the courage to declare that he or she is ready to face legal proceedings, that is the pinnacle of integrity,” said Akhiar.

In addition, Akhiar Salmi believes that the increasingly strong public aspirations for tougher sanctions against perpetrators of corruption are an important impetus for national legal reform.

The increasing public awareness of the importance of clean governance shows that the people are at the forefront in supporting the government’s firm steps to eradicate corruption.

“The higher the public’s expectations for deterrent punishment, the greater the government’s political legitimacy to strengthen anti-corruption regulations,” he explained.

This aspiration, he continued, reflects a shared desire to create an Indonesia that is free from corrupt practices and more just.

On the occasion, Akhiar also highlighted the importance of strengthening the integrity of law enforcement officials as the key to the success of comprehensive corruption eradication. He cited the police, prosecutors, and judges as key pillars determining whether the law enforcement process can be objective and effective.

“No matter how strong the laws are, without integrity in the hands that enforce them, justice will be difficult to achieve,” he stressed.

Akhiar emphasized that the government must ensure ethical development, increased professionalism, and stricter internal oversight of law enforcement officers.

The interview concluded with the affirmation that clean governance is not an abstract ideal, but rather a goal that can be realized when state leaders, law enforcement officials, and the public walk with the same commitment: to build an Indonesia that is just, transparent, and has integrity.
