JAKARTA — The conferment of the title of National Hero on the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, General H.M. Soeharto, by President Prabowo Subianto on Heroes’ Day on November 10, 2025, at the State Palace, affirms that the state respects the great services of figures who have contributed to maintaining the nation’s unity. This decision is stipulated in Presidential Decree Number 116/TK/2025 and was greeted with an appeal to maintain calm in public spaces.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the award is a form of constitutional respect for Soeharto’s struggle and dedication in maintaining sovereignty and building the national economy.
“Let us together maintain the value of unity and not be provoked by issues that could divide the nation,” he said.
He added that the meaning of heroism does not stop at the past, but must be realized in the spirit of mutual cooperation and love of the homeland in the modern era.
“Today’s heroes are those who maintain social harmony, respect differences, and strengthen national solidarity,” added Prasetyo Hadi.
Meanwhile, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasized that the National Police are ready to ensure the national situation remains safe and conducive following the awarding of the title. “We have prepared anticipatory measures in various regions to ensure the public remains calm and is not easily provoked,” he emphasized.
He explained that the role of the community is key to maintaining social stability amidst the proliferation of conflicting information on social media.
“Peace is not only the responsibility of the authorities, but also of all citizens who love this country,” Listyo Sigit Prabowo concluded.
Support for the state’s decision also came from religious organizations. The Head of the Muhammadiyah Central Board of Library and Information, Dr. Makroen Sanjaya, assessed the government’s move as a wise decision that prioritizes reconciliation of the nation’s history.
“Soeharto made a real contribution to the Republic’s journey, especially through the General Offensive of March 1, 1949, as well as the success of the development and food self-sufficiency programs,” he said.
He assessed that the award should be a momentum to strengthen the sense of nationalism of the younger generation towards the history of the nation’s struggle.
“The award to Soeharto is not merely a symbol, but a reminder that Indonesia’s development today rests on the foundations laid by our predecessors,” concluded Makroen Sanjaya.
The government emphasizes that the conferment of the title of National Hero must be approached with maturity and a spirit of unity. Respecting the state’s decisions is part of every citizen’s moral responsibility to maintain national stability. The heroic values inherited from Soeharto and previous freedom fighters inspire the Indonesian nation to continue moving forward with calm, dignity, and unity.
