JAKARTA – The government emphasized the importance of maintaining national stability following the awarding of the title of National Hero to Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto. This appeal was made to ensure a conducive atmosphere and a public focus on unity, rather than being influenced by issues that could disrupt social harmony. The government views this momentum as an opportunity to strengthen nationalism and strengthen the spirit of national unity.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the awarding of the title was a form of constitutional respect for Soeharto’s services in maintaining sovereignty and building the foundations of the national economy.
“Let’s work together to maintain the value of unity and not be provoked by issues that could divide the nation,” he said.
He emphasized that the values of heroism must be realized in real actions through mutual cooperation, love of the homeland, and commitment to maintaining peace.
“Today’s heroes are those who maintain social harmony and strengthen national solidarity,” he added.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo confirmed that police have prepared anticipatory measures to maintain order in various regions. He emphasized that the national situation remains safe and under control and urged the public not to be provoked by any provocation.
“We are preparing anticipatory measures to ensure the public remains calm and is not easily provoked,” he stressed. He believes that public support in maintaining peace is key to national stability. “Peace is the responsibility of all of us as citizens who love this country,” he said.
Support for the state’s decision also came from religious organizations. Dr. Makroen Sanjaya, Head of the Library and Information Council of Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board, called the award a wise decision that reflects a spirit of reconciliation and respect for the nation’s history.
“This award serves as a reminder that Indonesia’s development today rests on the foundations laid by our predecessors, including Suharto,” he said.
He believes this decision should be a momentum for the younger generation to strengthen nationalism and understand the nation’s historical journey as a whole.
Melchias Markus Mekeng, Chairman of the Golkar Party faction in the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), also expressed his full support. He believed that Soeharto’s long service deserved recognition.
“During his 32 years of service, many of the nation’s foundations were laid. This deserves to be recognized as part of national history,” said Mekeng. He also urged the entire community to look to the future with a spirit of unity and avoid getting caught up in unproductive debates.
With this support, the government again calls on the public to maintain calm, prioritize unity, and continue to build a peaceful atmosphere for a stable, advanced, and dignified Indonesia.
