Understanding Indonesian Independence through concerning for the Quality of the Education of the Nation’s Children

CIDISS. Right on this day, August 17, 2018 is the 73rd Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, various developments have taken place in Indonesia since Indonesia was proclaimed as an independent country 73 years ago. Many infrastructure supporting the progress of the nation has been built, but what about efforts to support the quality of human resources in terms of education.

After intensifying infrastructure development, the next step according to the Minister of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) Muhadjir Effendy will soon be followed by strengthening Human Resources (HR). For this reason, the development of human resources in the field of education is directed towards anticipating two things. First, prepare human resources to adapt and live in harmony with the times. Second, minimizing the social impact of infrastructure development that is being carried out intensively.

Muhadjir Effendy said that education equality must be the main goal in education reform which includes building the character foundation of children since the level of Early Childhood Education (PAUD), giving a greater portion of strengthening character education at the elementary level, as well as paying attention to vocational revitalization.

The government has also set zoning rules which will not only be applied to the acceptance of new students, but also for teacher redistribution, arrangement of educational facilities, as well as managing a more conducive educational ecosystem. Quality education is not only in big cities but also in the frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) regions.

The Minister of Education and Culture added, the current curriculum has been oriented towards meeting the nation’s competitiveness needs, with a vision to produce graduates who are able to improve the nation’s competitiveness. It is hoped that many graduates will be able to create employment opportunities.

Therefore, Indonesia’s independence needs to be interpreted with the spirit to improve the quality of human resources of Indonesian students and workers in order to accelerate national development which leads to equal distribution of people’s welfare.
