Natural Gas Utilization Becomes Government Strategy to Achieve Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta — The government continues to promote the utilization of natural gas as part of its broader strategy to achieve national energy self-sufficiency. This initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on energy imports.

Rosa Permata Sari, Director of Strategy and Business Development at PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), stated that PGN is pushing for increased utilization of natural gas, which holds significant potential to become a priority energy source in achieving national energy self-sufficiency.

“Natural gas is a fossil fuel with lower emissions compared to other fossil fuels. In line with the national energy mix, there is a considerable portion allocated for natural gas to be utilized as a priority energy source,” said Rosa.

She added that PGN has set out its priority strategy for the company’s growth over the next five years.

“We aim to add approximately 450,000 household connections over the next five years,” Rosa said.

In addition, PGN is developing a new product: biomethane. Biomethane is derived from agricultural waste — such as palm oil waste, straw, and animal manure — which is processed into biogas. This biomethane will eventually be injected into PGN’s existing natural gas pipeline network.

“Our plan is for biomethane to go on-stream by 2027 as part of our Net Zero Emission initiative. Through the ‘Step Out’ strategy, we are entering other natural gas derivative businesses or green energy such as ammonia and hydrogen (H2). Since these are new business ventures for PGN, we are adopting a partnership-based approach. With strong partnerships, we can adopt innovative technologies and effectively manage risks as we enter new markets,” Rosa explained.

Meanwhile, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), said Pertamina continues to prove its resilience through increased national oil and gas production.

“With these oil and gas production achievements, Pertamina demonstrates its contribution to Asta Cita, namely realizing energy self-sufficiency,” he said.

He noted that Pertamina continues to implement a dual growth strategy — maintaining national energy security through its core businesses while also expanding into renewable or low-carbon energy sectors.

“Through this strategy, Pertamina remains optimistic in navigating global challenges and dynamics within the oil and gas industry, while also striving toward energy self-sufficiency,” Fadjar added.

With consistent policy direction and support from all stakeholders, the government remains optimistic that energy self-sufficiency based on natural gas can be realized in the coming years.
