Opening ISF 2024, President Jokowi Encourages Humanitarian Global Collaboration

JAKARTA — In the opening of the 2024 International Sustainability Forum (ISF), Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized how climate change can be handled if we no longer use an economic approach and egocentric interests.

“I want to emphasize that the problem of climate change will not be resolved as long as the world uses an economic approach. As long as the world only calculates its own profits, and only cares about its own ego,” he said on Thursday (5/9) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

To resolve all the world’s climate challenges, according to President Jokowi, humane collaboration is very important.

“Because to resolve it requires a collaborative and humanitarian approach, and collaboration between developed and developing countries, as well as humanity so that the process does not sacrifice the interests of the common people,” he said.

For him, the realization of a green economy is not just for environmental protection, but for sustainable prosperity for the people.

“Because the green economy is not only about environmental protection, but also about how to create prosperity for the people, sustainable prosperity for the people,” explained President Jokowi.

Even on that occasion, the Head of State emphasized to the world not to doubt Indonesia’s strong commitment to achieving net zero emissions.

“Do not doubt Indonesia’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions and contributing to a greener world. Indonesia has abundant green energy potential, reaching more than 3600 Giga Watts,” he said.

On the same occasion, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan explained that the existence of the forum is very relevant and important to jointly face world challenges.

“ISF itself is very important to be held here, because this region is very rich in various things. Therefore, there must be a sustainability forum because it is also very relevant to facing various world challenges today,” he said.

Furthermore, according to him, ISF is not just a discussion forum to discuss the climate crisis.

More than that, however, ISF 2024 is also a platform to realize innovation and collaboration.

“I believe that ISF 2024 is not only related to discussions on the challenges of the climate crisis, but also becomes a platform to bring out innovation and collaborate for sustainable development,” said Luhut.

So far, Indonesia has continued to prove its leadership at the world level by continuing to use new and renewable energy (EBT), this is proven by the existence of the Floating PLTS which is even the third largest in the world.

“Indonesia has proven itself capable of leading the realization of sustainable development, by using new and renewable energy,”
