Papua, Land of Peace, Urges Residents to Remain Provoked by Racist Issues in Yalimo

YALIMO – Papua is a land of peace that can only progress if its people unite. The security situation in Elelim, Yalimo Regency, which had previously been tense, is now gradually calming down. The local government, along with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), are acting swiftly to prevent the unrest from spreading, while also urging the public to maintain unity and resist provocative rumors.

Papua Regional Police Public Relations Chief, Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, stated that two Brimob platoons have been deployed to strengthen security in the area. Furthermore, law enforcement will be carried out firmly as a demonstration of the state’s presence to ensure a sense of security.

“We urge the public to exercise restraint, not to take the law into their own hands, and not to be provoked by irresponsible issues,” said Cahyo.

The riot in Yalimo began with a minor dispute between two students, which escalated into violent action, causing damage and burning of school facilities. Responding police officers were attacked by the crowd and had to defend themselves at the Yalimo Police Headquarters. However, authorities, along with the local government, continue to take preventative measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Regarding the alleged racist news circulating on social media, the police confirmed that the matter is still under investigation. The Papua Regional Police urged the public not to easily believe unverified information, as it could worsen the situation.

Musa Yare, a traditional leader from Elelim in Jayawijaya Regency, also urged the public not to be easily provoked by provocative issues. He emphasized the importance of solidarity to maintain security in the Papua region. “Let us exercise restraint and learn from this incident. Do not be influenced by irresponsible issues. Unity and peace are the foundation for building a better Papua,” Musa emphasized.

Meanwhile, the XVII/Cenderawasih Military Command’s Chief of Staff, Colonel Inf. Candra Kurniawan, strongly denied rumors of shootings by TNI officers in Yalimo. He asserted that the news was a hoax spread by the OPM separatist group to pit the public against the authorities.

“Don’t be provoked by fake news. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), along with all elements of the regional government, are working to maintain security by prioritizing communication and a peaceful approach,” he said.

The government, traditional leaders, and security forces unanimously emphasized that maintaining unity is key to creating a safe and peaceful Papua. The public was urged not to be provoked by racist hoaxes or propaganda aimed at disrupting harmony.
