Jayawijaya – The oldest traditional leader of Jayawijaya, Naligi Kurisi, urged the public to maintain order and not be influenced by calls for action that could potentially trigger security disturbances during the commemoration of World Human Rights Day.
Naligi emphasized his commitment to supporting efforts to maintain regional stability with security forces, especially in December, which is considered a holy month for Christians in Jayawijaya.
“I urge the people of Jayawijaya to focus on their respective responsibilities. Don’t be easily swayed by invitations to engage in activities that could cause anxiety,” he said.
He also asked residents not to follow the call for action because he considered it vulnerable to being exploited by certain parties to incite unrest.
“Let’s welcome Christmas 2025 peacefully. Don’t take part in any actions that could create an unsafe situation. Wamena is our shared responsibility,” Naligi emphasized.
A similar message was also conveyed by the youth figure from Byak in Manokwari, Rommy Arwam.
Arwam reminded that this momentum should serve as a moral reflection for the people of West Papua to continue upholding the values of humanity, justice, and unity.
He emphasized that human rights issues are not only related to preventing violations, but also to fulfilling citizens’ basic rights, including the right to live in peace and to have fair opportunities in development.
“The commemoration of Human Rights Day in Manokwari needs to be understood as a shared commitment to strengthening unity and social harmony,” he said.
Arwam also appreciated the role of the Regional Government and the TNI-Polri in maintaining stability so that Papuan community activities could proceed normally.
Arwam reminded the public to remain vigilant against provocations, hoaxes, and calls that could potentially create division. He noted that there are always those who exploit certain opportunities to undermine regional security and stability. Therefore, he urged all citizens to be more critical in filtering information.
According to him, synergy between various elements of society is key to ensuring that the commemoration of human rights takes place safely and in a spirit of brotherhood, as only through such collaboration can social stability be maintained amidst the dynamics of Papua.
“Maintaining security is part of respecting the community’s right to live in peace and prosperity,” he stressed. #
