Papuan Leaders Call for Peace and Reject Provocation

Papua has once again been in the spotlight after the transfer of four treason convicts from Sorong to Makassar sparked social unrest. This situation has raised concerns about the potential for anarchic actions that could disrupt public order. In this context, the voices of traditional figures, community leaders, and local leaders in Southwest Papua have emerged as an important reminder for all levels of society to prioritize peace and not be provoked by harmful issues or calls.

This call for peace carries a profound message: social stability in Papua is not solely the responsibility of security forces or the government, but also part of the wisdom of indigenous communities, which have long upheld the value of harmony. According to traditional leaders, peace is the foundation for maintaining the livelihoods of the younger generation and simultaneously opening up space for more equitable development in Papua.

Demak Siji, a traditional leader of Aitinyo Raya in Maybrat Regency and a member of the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) for Southwest Papua, warned the public against being swept up in provocation. He emphasized that anarchic actions would only cause harm, both to the security and the socio-economic future of the community. This message reflects the wisdom of a traditional leader who fully understands the negative impact of chaos. When community energy is wasted on conflict, it hinders the development and prosperity that are so desperately needed.

Moses Kaliele, Head of the Binasket Tribe in Sorong Regency, echoed similar sentiments. He urged the public to remain calm and resist the influence of certain groups deliberately stirring up unrest. He believes stability is key to ensuring all elements of society can carry out their activities peacefully. This encouragement is not merely an appeal, but rather a reflection of the concern of a prominent figure who wants Sorong and the surrounding areas to continue moving forward without becoming entangled in unproductive conflict.

Furthermore, Moses Parebabo, a Biak Karon community leader and head of Ruaf Village in Tambrauw Regency, emphasized the need for the community to avoid negative issues that could potentially divide. He urged the Tambrauw community to create a safe and conducive environment for the common good. This attitude demonstrates that awareness of the importance of peace has become a collective commitment across all levels of Papuan society.

The appeals from these figures demonstrate that the Papuan people are highly aware of the need to avoid provocations that could disrupt the social order. In the context of Papua’s development, security and stability are essential. Without a peaceful atmosphere, it is difficult for the government and the private sector to implement strategic programs designed to improve public welfare.

Papua holds enormous potential, both in natural resources and cultural diversity. However, this potential can only be maximized if security is maintained. Conflict and chaos not only result in loss of life but also hamper regional economic growth. By maintaining peace, Papua will be able to attract more investment and accelerate infrastructure development and public services.

The role of traditional and community leaders is crucial because they are figures with an emotional connection to the people. Their advice is more readily accepted because it stems from long-held local values. This emphasizes that a cultural approach and local wisdom are key to maintaining harmony in Papua. When traditional leaders speak out and reject provocation, the community is more likely to believe that peace is the best option.

The central and regional governments cannot work alone without public support. Collaboration is the key to ensuring Papua remains safe. Security forces are expected to act humanely and prioritize dialogue, while the public is expected to protect themselves from the influence of misleading rumors. If both work hand in hand, Papua can serve as an example that peace is not a utopia, but something that can be achieved through shared commitment.

In this context, the appeals of Papuan leaders are commendable. They demonstrate that awareness of maintaining stability stems not only from formal instructions but also from the moral voice of the community itself. The moral messages conveyed by these traditional leaders are a concrete manifestation of social responsibility rooted in Papuan culture: maintaining harmony for the future of future generations.

Furthermore, the call to refrain from anarchic actions is also relevant to efforts to maintain Papua’s image at the national and international level. The world is currently focusing on how Papua is developing as an integral part of Indonesia. With peace, Papua can demonstrate its identity as a region not only rich in culture but also committed to national unity.

Ultimately, peace in Papua is a long-term investment. The call from Papuan leaders emphasizes that provocation only brings harm, while harmony opens the door to progress. Therefore, it is crucial for all Papuans to listen to the wise voices of their leaders, so that Papua remains a safe, peaceful, and prosperous home within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
