Papuan Traditional Leaders Firmly Support MBG for the Future of the Nation’s Children

Maybrat – Support for the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) and other strategic government programs continues to grow among traditional leaders and communities across Papua. From Maybrat to Jayapura, voices of customary leaders unanimously declare their readiness to safeguard national programs for the future of Papua’s generations—healthy, intelligent, and prosperous.

In Maybrat Regency, Southwest Papua, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) together with the Papua Barat Daya Provincial People’s Assembly (MRP-PBD) held an MBG socialization event in Tehak Besar Village, North Aitinyo District. MRP-PBD member, Demas Idie, emphasized the importance of the program.

“The Free Nutritious Meal Program is vital for our generation. Its success will have a significant impact on the future of Maybrat’s children. We should be grateful because the central government continues to build from the periphery,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of BGN’s Maybrat Coordination Office, Defilson Kambu, stressed that MBG is more than just food aid.

“This program will build a generation that is healthy, smart, and strong. We involve local communities as partners, from food suppliers to kitchen managers. So, it’s not just feeding children, but also empowering the community,” he affirmed.

Similar support comes from Central Papua. The Chief of the Meepago Tribe, Melkias Keiya, emphasized the vital role of tribal leaders in the success of government programs.

“As tribal leaders, we must act as extensions of the government so that the people do not misunderstand national programs. Central Papua must become a peaceful, bright, safe, and prosperous zone,” said Keiya.

In Jayapura City, Onfoafi of Kayo Island Village, Nicolaas Jouwe, also expressed his appreciation for the government’s four priority programs, including MBG.

“We are very grateful. The government’s presence in the villages makes the community feel direct benefits. If possible, these activities should not be one-off but become regular agendas,” Jouwe said hopefully.

From Maybrat, Nabire, to Jayapura, the support of customary leaders and communities demonstrates that MBG and other government programs receive a positive response. This synergy is a tangible proof that development in Papua is not only about improving nutrition but also strengthening local economies, empowering communities, and uniting the nation.
