A number of young Papuans are enthusiastic about participating in model selection to be able to appear at the Papua Street Carnival. The Papua Street Carnival which will be held in Jayapura, Papua, in early July 2023 was initiated by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf).
Prior to the event being held, a number of pre-event activities had been carried out, such as model auditions. The audition was attended by hundreds of young Papuans. The young Papuans who auditioned showed great enthusiasm. Later, they will have the opportunity to wear clothes made by native Papuan designers at the event.
One participant, Jessica Mollet (20), expressed her pride in being able to wear designer clothes from the Land of Papua.
“This is a big event, with this event we can all see the work of Papuan children,” said Jessica at the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH) building, Jayapura, Papua, Saturday (1/7/2023).
Despite being nervous during the selection process, Jessica was thrilled to be taking part in this big event. He also invited the Papuan people, especially young people, to participate in enlivening and making the event a success.
The same thing was conveyed by female participant Jesslyn Quinn Putri Amilasyah and a male participant named Issak. They admit that they gained new knowledge and friends when they participated in the model selection process at the Papua Street Carnival.
“We were taught basic catwalk. Exciting. This is a big event, you can get opportunities to express yourself and you can see creative Papuan children, for example Papuan designers who have expressed themselves through us,” said Jesslyn Quinn.
Apart from that, there will also be auditions for a singing competition and a photography competition with senior photographer Darwis Triadi as a jury. A number of preparations for the event have been made, such as dance practice such as Yospan Dance, Fuu & Tifa Dance, Marching Band, Color Guard, trainings, making clothing designs and so on.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to Menparekraf Sandiaga Salahudin Uno are planned to attend the event which will be held around the Governor of Papua’s office.
The Papua Street Carnival will involve thousands of creative economy actors, thousands of performers, hundreds of fashion parades, hundreds of creative MSME exhibitions, hundreds of decorative boats to a carnival that will display various works and Papua’s rich, beautiful and unique cultural heritage.
It is hoped that the Papua Street Carnival event will open up investment opportunities in the creative economy sector, have a positive impact on the local economy, increase people’s income, and become an effective promotional event for the Papuan tourism sector to the world.
The Papua Street Carnival event is collaborating with the Papua Youth Creative Hub (PYCH), which is under the auspices of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN). The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is also working with the Provincial Government of Papua and all parties to ensure the success of the Papua Street Carnival.
All elements of this event are designed to reflect the rich culture and traditional heritage of Papua, so that participants and spectators can feel the uniqueness and beauty of Papua. With the active participation of young Papuans, designers, artists and other creative economy actors, this event has the potential to become an annual event that is eagerly awaited and become an icon of Papuan tourism.
Apart from that, President Jokowi has also shown great concern for the people of Papua. His government has taken various steps to improve development and prosperity in the Papua region. President Jokowi has launched a number of development programs in Papua, including infrastructure, education, health and food security development programs.
