Jakarta,– Military observer and Head of the Center for Intermestic and Diplomatic Engagement (CIDE), Anton Aliabbas, assessed that President Prabowo Subianto has shown significant improvements in the development of the defense and security sector since becoming active in government.
According to Anton, Prabowo began his official involvement in the defense sector in 2019, when he served as Minister of Defense. Then, in 2024, when he assumed the presidency of the Republic of Indonesia, his attention to this strategic sector became even more apparent.
“Since serving as a minister until now as president, his attention to defense and security has increased,” said Anton in an interview with a radio station in Jakarta.
Anton explained that the defense sector’s major task is not only to maintain the quality of the main weapons systems (alutsista), but also to strengthen Indonesia’s active role in international forums to encourage the resolution of global conflicts, including those in Israel–Palestine and Russia–Ukraine.
All these steps, said Anton, are in line with the four national goals contained in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution: protecting all Indonesian people, advancing general welfare, improving the nation’s life, and participating in implementing world order.
“Building defense forces is unavoidable for the sake of national security,” said Anton.
However, he continued, this development must have a positive impact on the economy, particularly through strengthening the national defense industry.
“A strong defense not only safeguards sovereignty but also serves as a driving force for the national economy,” he said.
Furthermore, Anton said that President Prabowo has strong modalities to carry out this major agenda.
His strong military background, sensitivity to geopolitical dynamics, and extensive experience in the international arena have enabled President Prabowo to appear confident and be taken into account in various forums, both at the regional and multilateral levels.
“Indonesia’s bilateral relations with neighboring countries like Malaysia and Australia have also improved under his leadership. This is crucial for strengthening Indonesia’s position in the region,” Anton added.
With a combination of strategic vision, active diplomacy, and strengthening the defense industry, President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership is considered capable of leading Indonesia towards a modern, independent defense system and making a significant contribution to world peace.[]
