President Jokowi Successfully Chairs AIS Summit Emphasizing Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Blue Economy and Maritime Governance

Bali – The AIS Forum Summit in Bali focuses on efforts to overcome global problems in the first 4 areas, including, Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change, Blue Economy, Handling Plastic Waste at Sea and Good Maritime Governance.

President Jokowi said that archipelagic and island countries share common complex challenges that are interrelated and connected to each other, such as sea level rise, governance, marine resources and marine pollution.

“As fellow archipelago and island countries, regardless of whether they are big or small, developed or developing, we share common complex challenges that are interrelated and connected to each other, such as sea level rise, governance, marine resources and marine pollution,” said Jokowi in the opening speech at BNDCC (11/10).

The AIS Forum Summit was held to strengthen cooperation between island and archipelagic countries. These island countries have something in common, namely living side by side with the sea.

Previously, President Jokowi emphasized that archipelago and island countries have similarities.

“The sea is our life, the ocean is the unity of humanity and the ocean provides many resources that we must manage responsibly,” said President Jokowi.

On a different occasion, Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jodi Mahardi, said that Indonesia is trying to share practical solutions and innovations that have proven results in Indonesia so that they can be adapted and applied in other island countries and archipelagos to overcome the problems that arise. similar.

“There are many simple things, not rocket science, that we can apply in small countries and the community can be directly involved in making them,” said Jodi.

He explained that these programs will continue to be monitored and evaluated periodically and will be improved if necessary.

“If it is deemed successful, we will replicate this in other places, including within the country. “So we don’t just focus on developing the blue economy or other marine initiatives in other countries, but also within our own country,” he said.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L Marsudi explained that the process of making a leader’s declaration starts from the Senior Officer Meeting (SOM) level, namely first echelon officials.

“The results of the 5th MM AIS Forum 2023 were discussed by the heads of state at the AIS Forum 2023 Summit, and agreed upon at the end of the Summit chaired by President Jokowi,” said Retno.

For your information, the idea of ​​an AIS Forum Summit was initiated in 2017 based on the challenges faced by Indonesia as an archipelagic country. Meanwhile, there are a number of problems faced by archipelago and island countries, such as climate change, developing blue economy potential, connectivity problems, empowering coastal communities and marine pollution.
