As a nation rich in cultural, religious, and traditional diversity, Indonesia has long upheld the values of democracy, unity, and peace. Within this framework, the role of religious leaders, academics, and other elements of society is vital in affirming that anarchy and rioting are not part of Indonesian culture. Through various statements and firm stances, they have emphasized that Indonesia prioritizes the peaceful expression of aspirations to maintain national unity and stability.
On various occasions, religious leaders in Indonesia have unanimously expressed their rejection of all forms of provocation and violence arising from demonstrations and riots. They emphasized that expressing one’s aspirations is a constitutional right of every citizen, but it must be done peacefully and in accordance with applicable legal and ethical norms.
The Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Marsudi Syuhud, emphasized that the government has demonstrated wisdom by opening a space for dialogue and listening to the people’s aspirations. He believes that the democratic process must proceed in a conducive atmosphere, where the expression of opinions does not disrupt public order and safety. The expression of aspirations must be conducted peacefully and orderly, safeguarding the lives and dignity of all parties. He also added that the damage to public facilities and material losses caused by the riots actually harm the people themselves.
A similar view was expressed by political observer Aditya Perdana from the University of Indonesia, who stated that demonstrations that continue without a concrete solution could threaten government stability and disrupt public order. He argued that an appropriate government response is crucial to prevent the dynamics of mass demonstrations from escalating and causing greater damage. If the demonstrations continue without a solution, they will undoubtedly put significant pressure on the government and the public.
The Rector of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, appealed to students and the entire academic community to maintain order and security. He emphasized that acts of violence and riots must be avoided as they can harm many parties, including minority communities and public facilities. Everything belongs to everyone and is a necessity in everyday life.
Asep also emphasized the importance of officials and representatives in conveying aspirations honestly and responsibly. He reminded leaders not to be easily provoked and to always uphold the people’s trust for the nation’s progress. He emphasized the importance of building this country with a spirit of togetherness, tolerance, and resistance to provocation.
At the regional level, religious leaders are also actively reminding the public to maintain harmony and avoid provocations that could trigger unrest. The head of the Lamongan Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), KH Masnur Arif, urged religious communities not to be influenced by issues that could incite division. He emphasized that maintaining harmony is key to creating security and peace in society. We must maintain harmony together to ensure Lamongan remains safe, peaceful, and conducive.
Furthermore, political figure and advocate from the Perindo Party, Samuel Teguh Santoso, urged the public not to be provoked by divisive issues. He emphasized that demonstrations are the right of every citizen, but their implementation and management must be carried out responsibly. Maintaining a conducive situation is a collective responsibility, not solely the responsibility of security forces. The public must also play an active role in maintaining security and order.
This general view emerging from various circles demonstrates that the Indonesian nation needs stability and peace. Expressing aspirations peacefully and orderly is believed to be more effective in encouraging policy change and maintaining unity. With synergy between the community, religious leaders, academics, and security forces, Indonesia is expected to navigate political and social dynamics while adhering to national values and peace.
Demonstrations are a constitutional right that must be respected and listened to. They represent a form of public aspiration that should be a path to dialogue and solutions. When violence becomes the answer to these aspirations, it tests not only the public’s patience but also the legitimacy of the democratic system itself. Violence, including looting, arson, and other anarchic acts, clearly contradicts Indonesian values that uphold peace and harmony.
Furthermore, the role of law enforcement officers is crucial in maintaining order. The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and other security forces were reminded to work together with the public to control the situation and prevent the spread of anarchic acts. According to Prof. Asep, this harmonious cooperation is key to maintaining national peace.
Facing complex social dynamics, all parties are invited to unite in maintaining national peace and security. Indonesia must remain a nation that prioritizes brotherhood, mutual respect, and firmly rejects all forms of anarchism that contradict Indonesian culture. With a shared commitment, Indonesia is expected to overcome these difficult times and continue to progress as a peaceful and just nation.
Strengthening a culture of peace and avoiding provocation are crucial steps in safeguarding the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). With the synergy of all elements of the nation, Indonesia will be able to face various challenges and ensure that the spirit of brotherhood and unity is maintained. A great nation is one capable of resolving differences peacefully and upholding humanitarian and national values.
