Soeharto Deserves to Be a National Hero, National Figures Unite in Support

Jakarta – Support for naming Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, as a National Hero continues to grow. Religious leaders, academics, and public figures agree that his immense contributions to the nation rightfully deserve official recognition.

Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board, Dadang Kahmad, described Soeharto as a significant national figure whose dedication should be remembered.

“We support Mr. Soeharto as a National Hero because he made great contributions to the Republic of Indonesia, from the revolutionary struggle for independence to the era of national development,” said Dadang.

He highlighted Soeharto’s pivotal role in defending Indonesia’s independence, including his leadership during the 1 March 1949 General Offensive, which became a key moment in gaining international recognition for Indonesia’s sovereignty. During his presidency, Soeharto implemented the Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita), driving economic progress and national stability.

“When we honor a person’s heroism, it should not be viewed through political differences but through their contributions to the nation,” he added.

Similarly, Ahmad Fahrur Rozi (Gus Fahrur), Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), also expressed support for the Ministry of Social Affairs’ initiative to grant Soeharto the title of National Hero.

“Pak Harto made tremendous contributions to national stability and economic development. Under his leadership, Indonesia was recognized globally as one of Asia’s emerging economic tigers,” said Gus Fahrur.

He emphasized that a great nation is one that respects its leaders.

“Honoring him as a National Hero does not mean ignoring criticism; it reflects the maturity of a nation that acknowledges the great services of its leaders,” he explained, hoping the recognition would strengthen national unity and respect for historical figures.

Echoing this sentiment, Professor Marsuki, a senior scholar from Hasanuddin University, described Soeharto as one of the nation’s finest sons who brought Indonesia into an era of stability and sustained economic growth.

“After leading for more than 30 years and implementing extensive development programs, he is indeed very deserving of the National Hero title,” he said.

He added that the economic and security stability achieved during Soeharto’s leadership positioned Indonesia among the best-performing nations in the region.

“At that time, Indonesia’s economy was recognized as a rising Asian tiger. His contributions cannot be denied,” said Marsuki.

He also noted Soeharto’s decision to step down voluntarily in 1998 as a mark of true statesmanship.

“He demonstrated the heart of a leader who prioritized the nation’s interests above personal ones,” he remarked.

The growing support underscores Indonesia’s evolving national maturity—learning not only to remember its past but also to honor leaders who devoted their lives to the nation’s progress.
