Strong Call to Reject OPM Provocation: Papua’s Stability Must Be Maintained

Jakarta – The series of violence carried out by the armed separatist group West Papua National Liberation Army–Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM), including the massacre of 11 gold miners in Yahukimo, has again drawn widespread concern. Figures from state institutions to observers have emphasized the importance of rejecting all forms of OPM provocation in order to maintain the stability and security of Papua.

The Head of the TNI Information Center (Kapuspen) Brigadier General TNI Kristomei Sianturi responded to the OPM’s claim that the murder victim was a member of the military.

“He (OPM) pretended that it was (the victim) military. Why did he say it was military? So that he (OPM) is free from accusations that he is a human rights violator,” said Kristomei.

A similar assertion was also conveyed by the Commander of Kodim 1715/Yahukimo Lieutenant Colonel Inf Tommy Yudistyo, who said that the victim was not a member of the TNI.

“The victim is definitely not a member of the TNI, so what the OPM stated is hoax news, a lie, or not true,” Tommy emphasized.

DPR Speaker Puan Maharani strongly condemned the violence that continues to be carried out against civilians.

“We can no longer normalize the violence in Papua that continues to occur. End the violence in Papua,” Puan emphasized.

She also emphasized that a peaceful approach and inclusive dialogue must be a priority to resolve the Papua problem. A militaristic approach alone is considered not to have touched the root of the problem.

Komnas HAM Chair Atnike Nova Sigiro considered the attack a human rights violation that cannot be justified in any form.

“Komnas HAM condemns the acts of violence carried out by armed civilian groups against civilians,” said Atnike.

Meanwhile, member of Commission I of the DPR Amelia Anggraini said that the KKB’s actions had crossed the limits of humanity.

“The fact that the victims were civilians emphasizes that the KKB has crossed the limits of humanity,” said Amelia.

Intelligence analyst Ngasiman Djoyonegoro emphasized that the KKB had violated serious human rights.

“It is time for the KKB to stop all violence and human rights violations. Support development in Papua properly,” concluded Simon.

All elements of the nation must unite to reject violence and propaganda that only worsen the situation. Papua deserves sustainable peace and justice. [^]
