In the last few days, the land of Papua has again witnessed terror carried out by the Separatist and Terrorist Group (KST). The latest incidents of shooting occurred in Dekai District, Yahukimo Papua Mountains, and Baya Biru Airport, Baya District, Paniai, Central Papua. This action resulted in three security forces and two civilians being injured. This tragic event had a serious impact on the security and stability of the area.
Head of the Public Relations Division of the Papua Regional Police, Kombes Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, KST Papua launched a brutal shooting at the house of a TNI member in Dekai District. The incident occurred when civilians and two TNI members were gathering. During the attack, two perpetrators suddenly opened fire from close range, resulting in two TNI members and one civilian being seriously injured. The police immediately responded by investigating the crime scene (TKP) and starting a pursuit of the perpetrators.
Not only that, shooting also occurred at Baya Biru Airport. KST Papua again showed its violent actions by shooting local officers and residents. Two people were victims, including a police officer and a civilian. This incident shows that KST Papua does not hesitate to carry out acts of violence even in public places.
Facing this situation, the Commander of Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih Major General Izak Pangemanan gave a firm statement that the TNI would act firmly and without compromise against KST Papua. Izak stated that the TNI would pursue KST Papua and emphasized its commitment to protecting the security and safety of the Papuan people. Izak also considered the shooting action carried out by KST Papua as a form of terror aimed at creating fear among the community and hampering development in the region.
In the context of law enforcement, the Wamena District Court has sentenced KST Papua leader Penihas Heluka alias Kopi Tua Heluka to 13 years in prison. Penihas was found guilty of murdering TNI soldier Pratu Eka Johan Kaize and Brimob member Brigadier Usdar. The court’s decision is a positive step in providing justice to victims and the community, and shows the authorities’ commitment to enforcing the law against armed criminal groups in Papua.
Head of the Cartenz Peace Public Relations Task Force AKBP Bayu Suseno also expressed his hope that the verdict would provide a sense of justice to the victim and the surrounding community. The arrest of Penihas in Jayapura City in May 2023 shows the authorities’ efforts to crack down on criminals in the area.
In facing security challenges in Papua, firm, transparent and fair law enforcement measures are the key to creating long-term stability and security in the area. The sentence handed down to Penihas is a strong message that criminal acts will not be tolerated and will receive appropriate legal consequences. All levels of society, including the central government, TNI and police, need to work together to resolve conflict and ensure security and prosperity for the Papuan people.
Communities throughout Indonesia, including Papua, are expected to provide full support for law enforcement efforts against KST . A safe and peaceful condition in Papua is a shared responsibility to ensure that the lives of local communities can continue prosperously and without fear of security threats.
In facing acts of violence and terror committed by KST, community support is very important to create a stable and conducive environment. This support can be provided in various forms, ranging from providing information that can help security forces in uncovering crimes, to supporting government policies that aim to address the root of the problems in Papua.
The public needs to understand that law enforcement against KST is not only the responsibility of security forces and the government, but is also a shared responsibility as citizens. This support includes active participation in terrorism prevention and community development programs that can reduce inequality and improve prosperity.
Through joint support, the Papuan people can create a safe environment, support the development process, and strengthen unity. Maintained security will create a conducive space for investment, education and economic development, which in turn will have a positive impact on the daily lives of the Papuan people.
It is important to understand that resolving the conflict in Papua is not only through a military approach, but also through a holistic approach involving social, economic and educational development. The Papuan people and all of Indonesia must unite in addressing the root of the problem, creating dialogue and building trust between the central and regional governments. When communities unite in support of law enforcement, Papua can become a safe and peaceful place, where diversity is valued and the rights of every individual are respected. In this way, the community can work together to maintain the integrity and security of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and ensure a better future for future generations.
