Jakarta – The Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) Forum produced a number of important decisions.
Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said that the presence of the delegation provided inspiration to formulate agreements, where Indonesia has an important role in developing the Pacific region.
Members of Parliament are committed to supporting all efforts to achieve resolution of the problems of climate change, the environment, blue economy and sustainable development, and will present the conclusions to the governments of their respective countries.
IPPP will continue to be maintained as a forum for the aspirations of a number of Pacific countries and Indonesia. The DPR RI is committed to continuing to support cooperation with the parliaments of Pacific countries.
The delegation agreed that the DPR RI had successfully held the 2nd IPPP and was waiting for the implementation of the next IPPP.
In her closing speech, Puan Maharani said that all countries in the Pacific region need to build parliamentary diplomacy to contribute to building connectivity.
“As representatives of the people, we can play a major role in bridging relations between people in the Pacific region. “We have discussed the need to carry out development, namely development that involves all elements of society, including women’s empowerment,” he explained.
The representatives present had an understanding about the marine potential which has not yet been optimized. Today’s meeting is also related to discussing the huge maritime potential in the Pacific, so Parliament must put in place a blue economy.
The blue economy and optimizing marine resources as a priority are still receiving maximum attention for regional countries.
Furthermore, Puan said that Indonesia is committed to sharing knowledge and experience through training programs for partners in the Pacific.
Previously, in his opening speech, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the meeting emphasized the importance of partnership cooperation between the parliaments of countries in the Pacific region. This is very important to strengthen how to deal with situations of uncertainty, both in the world economy and geopolitical dynamics.
“We continue to need to develop the Pacific region to maximize its potential to improve prosperity,” said Jokowi when giving his speech.
Jokowi also emphasized that environmental damage is a major threat to the region. So it is necessary to strengthen parliamentary advocacy to mitigate this by adapting policies and increasing infrastructure and environmental cooperation.
It is very important to strengthen partnerships between the parliaments of countries in the Pacific region to face economic uncertainty and geopolitical dynamics.
“Human resource development through education and training carried out inclusively for youth and women to increase productivity,” said Jokowi.
