The Government Confirms that Public Schools Will Become Inclusive Institutions for Students with Disabilities

Jakarta – The government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal and accessible education for all through the development of People’s Schools (Sekolah Rakyat) as inclusive learning institutions, including for students with disabilities. The program, initiated by President Prabowo Subianto, is designed to ensure that no child is left behind in accessing quality education.

This affirmation was made by Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) during a visit to the Deli Serdang 1 Junior High School (SRMP). During his visit, Gus Ipul emphasized that the school prioritizes the principles of inclusivity and togetherness in the teaching and learning process.

He emphasized that all students, including those with disabilities, receive equal treatment in learning activities.
“And here, we’re united. We’re inclusive, we’re not discriminated against, we’re still learning together,” Gus Ipul emphasized.

At the school, one of the students is a disabled student with Down syndrome. Gus Ipul emphasized that every child has potential and strengths that must be discovered and developed by educators.

“So, people with Down syndrome do have difficulties learning like other children. But this child definitely has strengths, definitely has greatness. So, it’s the teachers’ job to strengthen this child’s special qualities,” said Gus Ipul.

He also appreciated the atmosphere of tolerance and togetherness fostered within the People’s School environment. He believes that mutual respect is a crucial foundation for schools to be safe spaces for all students. Gus Ipul emphasized that intolerance, bullying, or physical or sexual violence must be eliminated within the People’s School environment.

Support for the inclusive concept of the People’s School also came from the Commissioner of the National Commission on Disabilities (KND), Jonna Damanik. She believes the curriculum approach implemented provides ample space for each student to develop according to their talents and interests.

Jonna explained that the Multi-Entry Multi-Exit model is the main philosophy of the People’s School, so that the learning path is not rigid and provides opportunities for students with disabilities to grow optimally.

“The principle of multi-entry, multi-exit is the philosophy of the People’s School. They certainly have potential, which we are confident teachers, principals, and mentors can explore. The People’s School is inclusive of people with disabilities,” Jonna explained.

By strengthening People’s Schools, the government is encouraging the realization of an education system that is fair, adaptive, and oriented towards the potential of each child, so that human resource development is more equitable and just.
