The Government Encourages Downstream Processing for Sustainable Economic Growth

Riau – The Riau Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting downstream processing as a key strategy to accelerate sustainable economic growth. Riau Governor Abdul Wahid stated that his region has strengths in three strategic sectors: oil and gas, plantations, and the pulp and paper industry, which would provide significant added value if processed locally.

“These three sectors can develop and progress if supported by optimal downstream processing. We don’t just want to sell raw materials, but also create added value that can benefit the region and the community,” Wahid said.

Wahid considered the forum a strategic platform for strengthening collaboration between the government, businesses, and investors. He emphasized the importance of improving services and simplifying licensing to create a more attractive investment climate.

“If we can provide certainty and ease of doing business, I’m confident investment will grow. But we don’t just need investors; we also need development partners to deepen cross-sector synergies,” he said.

The Head of BPS RI, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, who was also present, emphasized that the plantation sector, especially palm oil, has an important role in driving the national economy.

“If this potential is managed through downstreaming and innovation, its contribution to national progress will be even more significant,” he said.

Amalia also appreciated Bank Indonesia’s move to launch the QRIS Card to facilitate digital transactions, which is expected to boost efficiency and change people’s consumption patterns in the digital era.

REF 2025 also included the signing of an investment memorandum of understanding between Oriens Asset Management and the Riau Provincial Government. Following the event, Wahid attended a discussion on the Malay ethnic group at Balai Dang Merdu, Pekanbaru, as part of the commemoration of Riau Province’s 68th anniversary.

On that occasion, he emphasized the importance of comprehensive and equitable development, including the establishment of three economic growth corridors in coastal and inland areas.

“This corridor will create a sense of justice. We want this concept to be implemented equitably,” he said.

With the spirit of downstreaming, equitable development, and strengthening human resources, Wahid is optimistic that Riau can move toward a more advanced, inclusive, and sustainable future. ()
